Classes have been pretty terrible so far. It's kind of okay, cause it doesn't really matter right now, but we should really register next week so we have to decide what to take now. 

First of all, U of M is really being a pain about credits. They are the perfect example of people who are so far removed from student life that they have no idea what is an acceptable policy. First of all, the 1/2 the credits to convert it to UM credit (5 credits here is 2.5 at UM). This is fair I guess, but they don't account for the fact that if we want anything worth any credit, it has to be in a different faculty. Like not the french as a foreign language (EFLE) faculty. The catch is, all of the EFLE classes are only worth 2.5 credits here, which makes 1.25 UM credits. To make it even worse, UM rounds down on credits. Meaning we would have to take 24 hours of class to do the bare minimum (12 credits) for UM. Additionally, if you want to get French credit for it, the class must be taught in 300 level French and the subject has to be at least 50% about french things. So basically French History or French Literature. This is almost impossible to find, and I have completely given up on getting French credit. 

Thanks to our persistent bitching though, I think they are changing their policy and the credit thing is slowly getting better. 

So I'm mainly taking satellite EFLE courses, which are for non francophones and people who are studying abroad. In different languages, they judge your level by a scale A1, A2, B1 --> C2 with A1 being "breakthrough beginner" and C2 being fluent. I am about a B1. I would take a test to tell me, but at orientation they admitted that this really wasn't accurate. 

It wouldn't have mattered, because the classes aren't accurate either. A B1 class I went to about creative writing was made up of half francophone students. The prof didn't make any effort to adjust the class for non-francophones who were at an intermediate level. We read some of the francophone's writing and we just couldn't understand a word. The vocabulary and cultural references were out of our league. It was just absolutely ridiculous. It was so obvious that this class was a joke for the French speakers, but the rest of us were completely lost. Literally the one rule to be in EFLE classes is that you can't speak French as your native language. Seriously. What. 

But then in another B1 class, one of our tasks was to group words into boxes depending on if they ended with an "er" (pronounced like -ey in "hey") sound or an "r" sound. 

The levels don't correspond at all to what the classes really are. Which makes choosing classes extremely difficult. We have to go to literally all possible classes in order to determine if this is feasible. Does the professor use a powerpoint? Or mumble to themselves as they read off of a piece of paper for two hours? Probably the latter. Do you have to write a paragraph or an 8 page essay? Are you provided with reading excerpts or do you have to buy 10 books? Do they speak slowly or quickly? Do they understand that French isn't your native language? 

I feel bad taking classes in an A level, because I know that I'm definitely in the B range. But I also neeeeeeed to do well this semester and I can't risk taking a B2 and having it actually be at C2 level. 

There's no way to tell except by trying everything. I'm going to 25 hours of class this week to figure out what I can take. Having that much class in French (all in 2 hour blocks, by the way) is really exhausting though. By the end of each day I'm really tired and listening to French gets harder and harder. 

Hopefully next week will be better and I'll have some idea of what to take. This is all so frustrating and I hate the fact that it's always on my mind.
