I love dispatch. Played it twice now but something keeps bugging me...
Invisigal is a very interesting character don't get me wrong, but I wish she didn't turn out the way she did in the final game.
As a quick disclaimer, attributing all of Invisigal's actions and behaviour to her ADHD is quite frankly disgusting. It can be a source but it isn't the primary influence as it is likely her entire upbringing that revolved around crime and being a villain shaped her mindset. It is also likely she never had a proper childhood hence why she acts immature most of the time.
Invisigal could have been a really good character, if not the best considering how much screentime she was given and how the plot centered around her. The writers had set up her character as a rebellious and emotionally dysfunctional individual, someone who would pose a challenge where sympathizing with them is concerned. Invisigal does have the foundation of a sympathetic character, considering she has only experienced a life of crime, however, I did not like how the game handled this.
For starters, her romance felt a little forced and awkward, made worse by the fact that the game centres her. Even before the starting point of the romance plot, invisigal's advances towards Robert always came off as weird and predatory. Most of their dialogue contains unprompted sexual innuendos that make the scenes awkward. Nothing wrong with sexual innuendos but there's no distinction between platonic jokes and borderline sexual harassment with invisigal considering she has violated Robert's personal space and boundaries on numerous occasions. Furthermore, it doesn't help that one of the episodes started out with a wet dream.
There's also the underlying "I can fix her" troupe throughout all their interactions including. Invisigal is not emotionally mature enough for a relationship nor does her attraction for Robert come from a place of genuine love. It borders more on obsessive than out of care considering her need for validation and the insecurities that push her to search for it. The romance route felt more like playing therapist and inadvertently feeding into those unhealthy desires. I feel like her redemption arc functions best when there's no romance attached to it as she is allowed to be her own person and better navigate her own emotions. Yes her arc can be completed without the need for romance, but it shouldn't have been an option in the first place or reserved for later.
Imo i think she could work best as a teenager which i will be covering in a sperate post.
