ego
As I near 50 years of age (still a few to go), here are some observations I want to share with the world.
—Shit's fucked.
—We need community leaders who care about everyone, not just businesses and property owners.
—We need to be willing to live simple lives, in service of each other, not needlessly complex lives in service of shareholders and investors.
—The needlessly complex and stressful yet somewhat luxurious lives of most folks being exploited in capitalist core countries are made possible through the much worse exploitation of the planet and other people on it. Rather than share what we have with those who need it, we could stop stealing it from them in the first place, but that requires a huge collective effort against the prevailing narrative (and those who enforce it).
—People who have autonomy, security, and support live more stable lives than those who are controlled, who are made insecure, and who lack support.
—Many things we think are necessities are just things that have been forced on us through cultural pressures.
—Asking for help and identifying the types of help you need can both be nigh insurmountable tasks. But it's important to make them high priorities in your life. And to find the right helpers.
—Online support groups and interest groups are a great way to recognize that you're not alone. Even if all you do is skim through the posts and comments from time to time.
—Ergonomics are more important than you think. More important than that. A lot more. I said A LOT MORE. Keep going. More. More! Double that. A little more. Just a bit more. Okay, right around there. That's how important they are.
—Money loses value quick these days. One way to invest money, if you have almost none to spare, is to pick up a few backups of stuff you go through regularly, when it's on sale. Over time, you'll build up spares and won't suddenly run out of something during a month with a tighter-than-usual budget.
—The concept of 'intellectual property' is an important one... under capitalism. And it's been perverted by capitalists to such an extent that it no longer protects the people who need protection and gives too much power to corporations and algorithms. Respect creators, disrespect corporations, and license under a copyleft. Knowledge is power. Spread knowledge to the people.
—Ethnic cleansings, genocides, apartheids, and the like are happening across the globe, in different timeframes, in different ways. And someone always profits.
—Socialist politicians, movements, and governments are targeted and attacked, across the globe, by the capitalists and capitalist nations who stand to lose profits. Journalists who expose just how immoral, illegal, illicit, and interconnected the anti-socialist actions undertaken are, are likely to end up exploded.
—Friendships don't have to be equal. Sometimes one person needs more than another. Sometimes a person doesn't have a lot extra to give. Give what you can, ask for what you need. Find a combination of friends who fit your needs and your capabilities to help. Quality over quantity.
—Actions that materially support people in need and actions that hinder, delay, or prevent injustices are of vital importance. Do what you can. Give support as you can. If you can't always walk the walk, find a way to be one of the people handing out hydration to those who walk it endlessly.
—Seriously. Ergonomics. I can't stress that enough.
Smart TVs have apps that play music. You can load up MP3s from drive, or use your Spotify account or whatever. You can just play audio. Music channels on cable services, simulated radio stations, have been a thing for what—25 years?
But what do TV manufacturers still not give us? A way to turn the picture off. They can do this. This would be so easy. Why do they not do this?
The state of your work environment sends subtle signals about your attitude, private life and productivity to everyone in your office as they walk by.
From the half-finished breakfast sandwich to the dog-eared Dilbert comic you clipped from the paper and hung on your monitor, your work environment is sending little signals about your attitude, private life and productivity to everyone in your office as they walk by. Find out how to take control of this unspoken conversation.
We can spend a lifetime building a good reputation and all it takes is a moment of unfavorable decision making to cast a shadow over all the good that was done. It takes just moments to shift families from dual to single parent homes; just a moment to build or tank a career; a moment to change someone’s entire perception of you. Moments…
