You are the guardian of the wild night. The one who leaps across the starry light. Yours is the shadow that spills into the lake. You sing the song that keeps the moon awake.

Book Review: Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli
Illustrations by Paul Yalowitz
Mr. Hatch is a man with no friends. He has a routine, both with what he does and what he eats every day. He is alone. Until the day that the mailman delivers a huge chocolate filled heart to him on Valentine's Day with a note that says "somebody loves you". It changes his life, gently encouraging him to engage with others, discovering friends along the way. Until he discovers that it was a misdelivered gift which sends him back into painful solitude, unable to believe he is loved by anyone. Luckily his new friends know exactly what to do.
Another YouTube selection, this time read by Hector Elizondo, who has been a favorite actor of mine for many years. How could I resist listening? This is a sad and sweet tale of a man who doesn't believe anyone cares for him, perhaps doesn't even believe he has any qualities to attract friends. He is given a chance to discover that he is worth more than he believes.
A particularly deep story for children of picture book age, yet I could see this being attractive to shy children as well as encouraging other children to reach out to those who seem to be alone and lonely. Exquisitely done with both words and pictures.

Happy Thanksgiving! Give thanks with these wonderful picture books this holiday season.
Doing the wrong thing wouldn’t be so common if it weren’t for this: Doing the wrong thing is often easier than doing the right thing. Think about it. If only nature would arrange it so that doing the wrong thing was really, really a pain—who would take the trouble? But in this real world, life doesn’t seem to work that way. In fact, in many cases, all the wrong thing requires of you is that you do… nothing. Nothing at all. Just give in.
