By now, most of you are at least aware of Explosions in the Sky either directly or as a result of hearing “Your Hand in Mine” in Friday Night Lights or another commercial. Maybe you know them from the many soundtracks they’ve written and scored. Or maybe you lived in Texas and found out about them because they’re beloved, albeit elusive and enigmatic there, too. I first heard “Time Stops” in 2001 thanks to whichever downloading software I was using at the time and aside from Mogwai, I’d never heard anything post-rock before. The first two or so minutes of that song will forever remind me of what it felt like to wake up way too early and sit on the hood of my car and smoke a cigarette while watching the sun come up over snowy cornfields and wonder if I’d ever escape the 5-stoplight town I grew up in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ XITS is originally from the desolate and remote part of Texas far away from the Tito’s Vodka sponsored parties of Austin and the giant hairstyles of Dallas and the delicious food of Houston. Their inclusion on the soundtrack of Friday Night Lights was perfect as they were as authentic to the Permian Basin as taking high school football way too seriously. The climate is different, but I like to think that the headspace these guys found themselves in when they started a 20 year career of writing some of the most perfect accidental soundtrack songs of all time was not unlike my tempered hopefulness of a better life as a kid. Thanks to Temporary Residence Ltd, none of us have to shell out $800 for a used copy as of today.
