How would eldrazi temple need to be worded for the ability to work with world breaker then?
It would need to specify that it could be spent to activate abilities of Eldrazi cards in the graveyard/any zone. There’s no precedent for this kind of effect though.
You can’t use mana from Eldrazi Temple’s second ability to pay for World Breaker’s activated ability.
I know, I know... it really really looks like you should be able to do so, but you can’t. Why you can’t boils down to the last word in Eldrazi Temple’s CC ability: “Eldrazi.” (It has nothing to do with Devoid. Devoid functions in all zones.)
When a card refers to a creature type (or permanent card type or subtype) this way, it means permanents of that type on the battlefield and not other cards of that type in other zones.
109.2. If a spell or ability uses a description of an object that includes a card type or subtype, but doesn’t include the word "card," "spell," "source," or "scheme," it means a permanent of that card type or subtype on the battlefield.
World Breaker’s activated ability can only be activated while it’s in your graveyard, which makes it an Eldrazi card in your graveyard at that time, not an Eldrazi permanent and thus it’s ineligible to spend the mana from Eldrazi Temple’s second ability on.
Similarly, you can’t spend the CC from Eldrazi Temple to pay for the triggered abilities of Bearer of Silence, Eldrazi Obligator, Vile Redeemer, or Gravity Negator since these costs are neither the cost to cast the spell nor to activate their abilities.
Compare the wording of Eldrazi Temple’s second ability with the wording of Cultivator Drone’s mana ability. That last bit on Cultivator Drone, “or pay a cost that contains {C},” exists specifically for the cards like World Breaker and Bearer of Silence so that Cultivator Drone’s mana can be spent to pay these costs.
This post was requested by a friend of mine that works in R&D at Wizards, and who am I to say no to a request like that? :)
With the rise of the Eldrazi decks in the modern format this weekend at Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch, I figured I would point out a really fun way to shut down both Eye of Ugin and Eldrazi Temple: Painter’s Servant.
Painter’s Servant makes every card in play, hand, the stack, library, etc. the color of your choice. More importantly, it makes normally colorless cards no longer colorless. This means that Eye of Ugin doesn’t reduce the cost of any spell, its ability can’t search for anything, and the mana from the CC ability of Eldrazi Temple can’t be used to cast any spells.
Yes, Painter’s Servant is a 1/3 artifact creature, which makes it vulnerable to a lot of removal, but it’s a fun and weird complement to other more traditional ways to hose these lands.
