Patrice Rushen - Kickin' Back (c.1975)
One of the best parts of being in a loving relationship is waking up to that person right next to you. You almost breath a sigh of relief. It wasn’t a fleeting dream, after all, you are blessed. Unfortunately, relationships themselves often are fleeting. Australia’s Emerson Leif addresses the pangs of missing waking up to that special someone on Wake Up With You, featuring Golden Vessel on production and mixing duties. The song arrives a full year after Emerson Lief enamored us with his debut single Twenty2, which you can revisit via our feature, here. With the smooth soulfulness of HONNE and the funk-tinged craftmanship of Ben Khan and Jai Paul, Wake Up With You gives us a welcome preview of what’s to come on Emerson Lief’s upcoming debut EP. On the single, rhythmic guitars, creamy caressing vocals, and trademark stylish lyricism depict a romantic tale of appreciation for a significant other. Emerson Lief explains: ‘Wake Up With You’ is an expression of how life-giving a significant person's presence in your day can be. To reach out from a dreamscape of sleep and feel the touch of a familiar hand. The seemingly simple experience of waking up next to someone that ‘just gets you’ is in itself both cathartic and regenerative.” The track highlights a period of time whereby Leif endured loneliness after the hustle and grind of daily work, and how he wished for nothing more than to share these moments with someone special which is something we can all relate to at some point in our lives. You can also stream Wake Up With You via other digital platforms, here, as we await word on that debut EP.

“Wait wait wait, is he talking about weed?” A lighthearted earworm that’s everything you expect out of a dank weed song. x
Equal Echo is a new jazzy soul-pop duo from London that you don’t want to miss out on. The project of producer/DJ Hector Plimmer and singer songwriter/instrumentalist Alexa Harley makes theri debut with a sophisticated cut named Pandora. It’s a snazzy sweltering groover from their debut EP, Dynamite, poised to arrive this summer. Equal Echo’s members are already acclaimed in their own right with their personal projects, and their forthcoming electronic soul tinged 4-track EP reveals how the multi-faceted duo are the perfect union as Equal Echo. Considering Alexa Harley’s soulful alluring vocals, it’s no surprise that she’s collaborated with the likes of Tom Misch, Hybrid Minds, and Mt Wolf in the past. Hector Plimmer is an exciting London-based beatmaker who makes his own unique style of atmospheric, hypnotically rhythmic music. Pandora sees the two seamlessly melding those gifts to give us a late night lounger ingrained with restless passion. If Tom Misch and Elder Island had a jam session, they might craft a sweet tune that sounds like Pandora. The single is available, here.
Heads up, kids. A must listen new arrival just came out of the music woodwork but less than an hour ago, and it comes from none other than post-dubstep, electronic, and gospel-imbued soul troubadour James Blake. I’ve actually been wondering for awhile now when he’d unleash some new music on us. The UK singer songwriter and producer is responsible for one of the best shows I attended last year. I was there for one of his three sold out shows at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco and he was nothing short of magnificent, whether it was his solo ballads on piano, his dub heavy re-visits of older classics, or the immense catalog of new music he blessed us with that magical evening. This afternoon, he’s finally released a beautiful new song named Don’t Miss It via a lyric video of sorts. It’s a much pensive and reflective song, sparse and understated yet gorgeously mesmeric with its soft trickling beats, haunting keys, and soulful cooing. Don’t Miss It, which is a collaboration with Mount Kimbie’s Dom Maker, almost feels like a CocoRosie song mixed with James Blake’s downtempo gospel and electro-soul.
I’m a Libra, so as any horoscope aficionado probably knows, indecision is something that I face pretty often. LA and London duo FARR offers up the perfect soundtrack for those hesitant moments with their new song Indecision, a bold throbbing alt electronica and soulful alt pop anthem. There is one thing I’m rarely indecisive about, and that’s music. My love for FARR fails to waver as the pair return with this slick and confident tour de force, a song that recalls the torrid heat of Opia, the dapper allure of TENDER, and the broiling swagger of France’s Her. Don’t be indecisive, stream/download the single, here.
