For the fic rec ask game!
11. Recommend a fic you think is a hidden gem/deserves more reads.
Thanks for the ask @therealjambery. I answered another #11 earlier but that one was specifically winterhawk and yours isn't, so I have one from MCU and one from DC...
Slipping Through the Cracks, by dentalfloss. It’s not like this fic hasn’t gotten a good number of reads and kudos, but by comparison with most of D’s other fic, it’s far below the rest of her works. Yes, it deals with difficult themes but it’s soooo well done and she treats it incredibly respectfully. Heed the tags, but if they aren’t a hard-no for you, then I definitely recommend Clint Barton/Hawkeye fans read it. I love the characterization of Clint in this fic—his quiet determination and lack of self-pity, ugh, just so good. Guts me every time I read it but as it’s tagged as pre-Clint/Coulson, I think that gives it a hopeful ending. 10/10, highly recommend. (fyi: dentalfloss' works on ao3 are locked so you must be logged in to read it.)
Over in DC, in the Jay/Dick flavor, I think The Life in Your Years by element78 (@element78) is underappreciated. It’s kind of a quiet fic—not a lot of drama, no case, no real crises. Well written and just really lovely. Fic summary:
Jason and Dick, growing up, growing older, growing together.
(the story of two lives, told in those small moments that mean nothing and change everything)
Deep in the forest, there is a mysterious old man, a cursed manor, a blue-eyed wolf following his every move, and a hauntingly familiar young man who knows something he is not sharing. Jason, a hunter in the nearby village, is just trying to survive the winter. But he'll have to unravel the mystery of it all, including his own missing memories, if he wants to protect the people he cares about and save himself.
This is a fantastic fairy tale AU, taking elements from many different fairy tales and blending them together into something new and well worth reading. Wonderful atmosphere and plot. Fandom: Batman - All Media Types Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Dick Grayson/Jason Todd Additional Tags: no capes AU, fairytale AU, curses and spells and such, Memory Loss, Transformation, brief description of animal death as associated with hunting, absolutely no research done into the proper historical setting

What I really love about this fic is that it's quiet and soft. Because sometimes you just want a fic that isn't all about angst or drama, but is about two people who love each other and make a relationship work for a really long time. This fic spans decades and includes glimpses of other batfam members but is really just about how Dick and Jason love each other. I'm extra pleased that it includes a short scene of Jason rushing to the hospital for Dick, but not because he was whumped but just because his stupid knee gave out on him. Idk, why this fic speaks to me so much, maybe because it's not about them being vigilanties--though they are vigilanties here--but about them being a couple, outside of their night jobs. They feel very *real* and I love that.

This piece is wonderfully atmospheric. It feels blue-tinted despite moments of heat—there's a beautiful sense of melancholy even in the happiest moments. Jason, a sailor in what I believe is some unspecified time in the 18th century, is hurt and subsequently rescued by a dark-haired, blue-eyed, sharp-toothed siren. What follows is a slow courtship between two very different creatures with startlingly similar ideas about beauty and morality. It's a lovely, lovingly told story that I've read more than a few times.

Summary:
The shape moves like an oil slick, all serpentine grace as it lightly pushes off from the building it's perched on, big wings tucking in close and body twisting like a cat’s to land on feet and wing-hands on the street below, facing Jason. For one moment they’re eye-to-electric-blue-eye- and then the wyvern pushes up and snaps its wings open again with a sound like a thunderclap. It leaps into the air, beating its wings once, twice, already above the rooftops and gaining altitude fast. “Wait,” Jason croaks, then yells “wait,” but the wyvern is gone, wingbeats muffled by distance, blue flickers of static trailing through the air from its wingtips and tail. Jason stares up after it and aches to spread his own wings and follow it into the sky.

Most dragon AUs that I've found tend to just be playing around with a cool setting, but this story not only has some amazing worldbuilding but a really well-crafted plot.
