Summary: What makes a monster and what makes a hero? The question seems so simple, Link has never had any reason to think about it. But as he chases an enemy with mysterious intentions across Hyrule, he finds the question concerns him more and more.

The thing surged out from the dark, dragging the dark with it, and attacked, sword raised. Link barely got his own blade up in time to block. He was holding the shield Purah had made him in reserve, for now, but he would be ready in case this thing got its hands on him.

The puppet fought with a silent, vicious implacability. If Purah's trap really had almost killed it, there was no sign of that now. It was faster than it had been, stronger.

So was Link. They clashed, over and over, the fight growing more brutal as it became clear how evenly matched they were and each sought some small advantage. The puppet kicked Link through a pile of lumber, readied by the construction crews. Link peppered it with arrows of all kinds. The puppet nicked Link with its unholy sword and Link nicked it with his holy one and both wounds steamed and hissed.

My favorite scenes in the LotR books are the ones where Legolas has vital information and just decides it's not important to share.

Like when Gandalf spent literal PAGES trying to figure out why the vibes were off in Moria and Legolas chimes in with just "it's a balrog :) that shit's evil :) we're so fucked :)" like what do you MEAN you knew already and just didn't tell him??

Or at the beginning of Two Towers when Aragorn thinks there's something nearby so he puts his ear to the ground to listen, and then like 10 minutes later is like "hmmm i hear horses" and Legolas is just like "mm yep. there are 105 blond bitches with spears" like you just let your friend put his face in the dirt and you can SEE them??

Apparently you can soak your birdseed in chilli oil to keep away rodents like rats or squirrels - because obviously birds can't detect capsaicin and mammals can.

I like to imagine all Rito food is unbearably hot, even deserts, because they soak all their food stores in hot pepper oil. They have to import in most of their fresh produce because not much grows in Hebra beyond wheat and hot peppers, so they probably jar or dry a lot to preserve it, so everything in the food stores is just completely infused with pepper oil. They can't taste it and it keeps out critters.

Not that many mice or rats dare enter a village full of enormous birds of prey anyway. But it keeps out the bugs and beasties that do dare.

But unfortunately it sucks for any other races who visit the Village because every single food item burns their tongue off. And the Rito just think it's hilarious to watch.

Squidge! Holy blast from the past, Batman. The last time I remember even looking at that site was... eons ago.

Not only is Squidge still around, it's expanded and grown! It is still run by the same guy, though now it's a nonprofit with a board and everything, and while they maintain all the old squidge sites as static archives, they have a new multifandom archive using the AO3 code at squidgeworld.org. They also host podfics and fanart.

For those younguns in the crowd, back in the day erotic fanworks--especially slash--was not welcome very many places. Walter was willing to host it, and has been a haven for NSFW fanworks since 1994. The various archives and so on hosted at squidge.org were never very large, compared to lots of other archives, but they were a necessary part of the fannish ecosystem, and I'm really glad that there is now a structure in place to keep the whole system running beyond just "Walter's a great guy willing to donate lots of time and money." Walter is a great guy! but like. it's good to have other people to help out and keep things going in the long run.
