My headcanon is Libber and Cliff were together at Jay's birth but a few weeks in Libber found out about Cliff's affairs, probably had a breakdown and left with Jay. Cliff then paid an investigator to go after them. Libber fought the investigator but having given birth not too long ago lost and the investigator just took jay and left. Cliff didn't want Jay so he gave them to Ed and Edna. I think maybe one could be like Libber's aunt/uncle? Just based on how similar their personalities are and how elemental powers seem to influence personalities. So that's why they were chosen. Libber doesn't know where he is. They don't know he's Libber's. Maybe that's too dark for a kids show though.
OUUHHH THAT SOUNDS LIKE SUCH A GOOD IDEA😍 It might be too dark for the show but I love discussing how events would change if Ninjago was for adults etc. Also it's so funny how the whole fandom agrees that cliff is just a *Bad word* LMAOOO
