Okay, so rune-etched sword. Runes produce lightning, constantly. That’s a problem when you need to sheathe it. So rubber sheathe and rubber cross guard seal the lightning in. It sits and waits there, but when it’s needed again and drawn, it releases a lot of the pent up lightning in one go, the first swipe as it clears the scabbard. This could both be good and horrible, depending on where the weapon is unleashed. It also would need to be released every now and then to discharge extra energy or it could scrub the runes off the blade, rendering it useless as an elemental weapon, and probably also ruining it as just a weapon, melting it into slag inside the scabbard.
