Best librarian day ever!! I had a first grade class visit the library and instead of reading a picture book to like I usually do, I decided to read the first two chapters of PRINCESS CORA AND THE CROCODILE by Laura Amy Schlitz and Brian Floca. Side note: 2/3 of my students are English language learners and I have been thinking a lot about how most of them can't access books at their reading levels because they don't have enough words in their word bank. My solution: read books 2-3 grade levels above where they are to start putting words in that bank!) Most of the kids were sad when I stopped at the third chapter - just as the crocodile, dressed as Princess Cora so she can have the day off, is about to head off to greet the King, Queen and nanny - and unthinkingly said I would read more at lunch recess (when they can play with so many educational toys in the library, not to mention the playground) if they asked me to. I have seven first graders and a few second and third graders pull up bean bags and crowd around my chair to listen to me read at lunch! I even had one student return after school insisting I finish reading the book to her. Not much makes me happier than a kid asking me to read s/him a book! PS: PETTICOAT was the most memorable vocabulary word I defined today! ❤️📚 @candlewickpress @brianflocaa21f #library #librarylife #elementarylibrary #elementarylibrarian #englishlanguagelearners #vocabulary #petticoat #princesscora #princesscoraandthecrocodile #crocodile #kidsbooks #kidsbookstagram #books4yourkids #readtome #readoutloud #school #recess #lauraamyschlitz
