Celegorm kept a journal of his travel. On the eve of the attack on Doriath, Celegorm wants to write a last entry, unaware it would really be his last this side of the Sea.

“This is not goodbye,” Celebrimbor promised.

Maeglin still hesitated, unable to quite believe it. “Even—even if I find you again, out there,” he mumbled, “why would you want to see me again?”

Celebrimbor squeezed his hands, as much as he could given how ephemeral he was. Maeglin was already mostly solid, the astonishing proof of Mandos’ promise of rebirth, but Celebrimbor’s healing would take a while yet.

“You’ve come so far, Lómion,” he said gently. “Don’t regress now. I promise I’ll join you in Aman soon.”

“I’m only going because my mother won’t go without me,” Maeglin sighed. “She deserves to live.” But I don’t, was left unspoken, yet it was all too obvious how he felt.

“Go, live,” Celebrimbor urged. “Be free, Lómion. Be the person you were always meant to be.”

Maeglin flinched. “I—I decided...I didn’t want to change my hröa,” he confessed. “I don’t...”

“That’s not what I meant,” Celebrimbor chided, “and you know it. I mean—go, be yourself. Without a father to shape you, or a city to watch you. Just be you.”

“I don’t know who I am,” Maeglin whispered.

“Find out,” Celebrimbor encouraged. “I know you can. Go, Lómion. When I’m ready, I’ll find you,a nd I promise I’ll love you just the same.”

He pressed the softest of kisses to Maeglin’s lips, his spectral form barely tangible against Maeglin’s now-solid hröa. “I can’t wait to know you even better...”

And then: Maeglin woke, gasping, with the kiss lingering on his lips and Celebrimbor’s words echoing in his mind.

This is not goodbye, he told himself, and rose to greet his second life.
