This week I spent quite a lot of time thinking about craft. Well, about death and craft, their relationship, how crafted objects retain some part of the soul of their maker (some part of their personality, at least), how we craft to help in the grieving process. About what the crafted objects become, after their maker, or the person for whom they were made, dies.

I make things, and I think about making things all the time, be it embroidery, sewing, knitting, putting together one thing or another, imagining the perfect object, device, system, to help us in our lives. I’m bursting at the seams with ideas and projects, and I live with chronic fatigue and pain, so committing enough time to One in particular and getting it Done really means something.

I make things so that they will endure the passage of time, I always make sure of that. I know some people craft for the moment, and I wish I could allow me to do this. It would save time, I’d probably get a lot more done. I don’t know if I would draw happiness from it, though. There has to be a balance somewhere, but I haven’t found it. I only try to do things the way that feels Right.

I lurk in textile crafts spaces and read/hear about people who were gifted absolute treasures of Time spent, and gave/threw it away. I saw people mocking the maker for the supposed ugliness of the result, and the picture of the gift in a trash bin.

It’s almost a consensus that you don’t make elaborate or time-intensive crafts for people that you don’t know well, because they’ll probably be happier with a cute mug than with a blanket on which you spent 50+ hours and sometimes fortunes of materials. (You never know people very well).

I’m a maker, and I make things so that they’ll hopefully last me a lifetime.

This means that a lot of things I make will outlast me and the people to whom they were gifted.

I won’t have children, and I’ve seen what people do with their grannies sweaters anyway, discarded in thrash containers. (I can’t save them all, some are beyond saving; but I try)

What will happen to them then ?

Death of the author, death of the maker ?

I hope they’ll serve others then, and that they’ll bring joy and warmth to their new homes.

I hope that the things that can decompose will be allowed to do so, when their time is up.

I hope they won’t end up in a landfill somewhere.
