#elephant skull

I visited the Teylers Museum in Haarlem to sketch a bit. They have some beautiful fossils and bones there. The frog/salamander fossils and the pterosaurs are probably my favourites, though they have awesome mosasaur jaw fossils as well (but it was a bit crowded so I didn’t draw those). Lots of cool stuff.

And that’s nothing to say of all the old scientific instruments they have. I’m definitely returning there one a less busy day.

This is a REAL vintage elephant skull! Elephants are the largest extant land mammal on Earth and this bull male is a vintage specimen from the early-mid 1900s. It measures roughly 3ftx3ftx3ft at the longest points. We are strongly against the modern trophy hunting and poaching of elephants (and any at-risk species) or the trade in modern elephant tusks. This specimen came out of an estate sale in Alberta and was collected prior to these beautiful animals becoming a threatened species or the formation of CITES. She was my very first creation after the fire. October of last year. April 24 was the fire. Took me a while in morning.

She is very simple but the gateway to the realisation that not all was lost in creating dolls of sorts.
