Hi, if you haven't already, could you review the marble color for Neopets?
Marble has got to be one of the most woefully inconsistent colours out there, as it has not one, not two, but THREE different concepts attached to it. One is marble as in glass playing marbles. One is marble as in the rock. And one is marble as in water marbling. Like, what? Just pick an idea and stick with it.
Frankly, I think the glass marble idea is the strongest. Ever since the ancient glass paintbrush was retired in the early 2000s, glass has been a previously unexplored idea in terms of Neopets colours, whereas the other two have clear similarities to other colours (marble rock for relic and water marbling for camouflage). You can tell that was the original idea as well, as it was what was presented in the initial poll and what the paint brush is based off of. Glass allows for variety but also thematic consistency, and when done well, it just plain looks nice (not that other concepts don't look nice, of course).
In terms of visuals, the glass marble pets sometimes have issues actually looking like glass, with many of them accidentally looking like jelly pets instead. This is a combo of rendering and colors—many glass marble pets are colors that marbles don't normally come in. The rock marble pets look rocky enough and typically only come in dull colors, while the water marbling pets have decent variety but there's also only like two of them so far.
Marble was released after conversion, so there's no pre-customization art to talk about.
Favorite Species:
Chia: The glass Chia's blown-glass hairdo is delightful and is an angle I wish more marble pets would explore. The glass rendering also looks appropriately glassy, with good transparency and shading. A simple two-color palette brings the whole thing together nicely.
Elephante: The very first marble pet shown due to being created for the initial pick-a-colour poll, the marble Elephante looks really nice. Similar to the Chia, it has good color choices and some nice cat's eye-streaks, but what I really love it he subtle detail of air bubbles in the glass.
Shoyru: I think light blue marble pets (of the glass variety) look really nice, and the Shoyru is a nice example of that. Like the Elephante, it has nice detailing with the air bubbles and the orange streaks really pop.
BONUS: I wanted to spotlight one non-glass marble pet here, and the Marble Eyrie felt like a good pick. Don't know if I'm alone on this, but I really like the soft gray look with golden streaks throughout, and the swirling looks very water marbling-esq, for what it's worth. The shading is also nicely detailed compared to the Eyrie's base colours.
Least Favorite Species:
Gelert: I think this was supposed to be a rock marble pet (calacatta-style), but the fact that I'm not 100% sure is not a great sign. The high-contrast black and white just looks very messy, and the swirls lack any sense of form or flow. If it was mostly very subtle thin black lines with only a few large swaths of black, it would've been a lot better.
