My Hot Take:

I find it both unfair and unjust that we often portray Maria Clara from Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo as weak, submissive, and unworthy of being seen as a representative figure for Filipinas. This perspective dismisses the strength and resilience she showed in fighting her battles, albeit in her own quiet and unconventional ways.

Let us begin by acknowledging that Maria Clara’s form of resistance was not about loud defiance or outward rebellion but rather about challenging expectations and societal norms in deeply personal and impactful ways. She didn’t just conform to the rigid standards that were placed on Filipina women during her time. Instead, she forged her own path- unfortunately, at great personal cost.

A Fight Against Expectations

Consider the pressures she faced: Maria Clara was expected by society, her family, and her father to follow a conventional role as a wife and mother. Yet, she made a conscious decision to reject these expectations. When she found out that she just lost the love of her life, she walked away from wealth, social status, and familial ties. Hello! So today is currently Rizal Day in the Philippines and I wanted to share this little comic I made for our Rizal class a year ago. The prompt was the "ideal filipino woman" based on Rizal's "Letter to the Women of Malolos". For those not in the know, Rizal is the Philippine National Hero.

I took some relevant quotations from that letter and placed it in the perspective of an alternate Pia Alba, a character from Noli Me Tangere.

In the original story, she withered away after being taken advantage of by Padre Damaso, inevitably dying after giving birth to Maria Clara. The concept for this comic piece came from me and my boyfriend's conclusion: if the world Pia Alba had lived in prioritized moral good derived from rational thinking and passed that strength onto her child, then maybe things wouldn't have ended as badly as they had.

--Spectra doesn't really give a shit about your feelings, but really he has a huge issue trying to even properly acknowledging his own feelings, the condictions on his family with Clay been and absent parent and his mother's death put him in a delicated position, mostly becuase he started to sick that atention by corporal means, his position of a public figure has brought him diferent standars in beauty and behaviours, so at the sametime that he develops anorexy, he also fells more and more in the world of sexualize himself for the confort of been important and notable.

--Would Clay be heartless enough to take his Intersexual child as a test subject to make true a treatment to help intersexual persons in Vestal been capable of having offprings even with there hormonal problems and helping there non-funcional organs to be funcional again?, and the answer is yes, yes he would.

--On his relationships, he is like a cat, don't force on him and don't try to control him, must of the time he just got into relationships because he doesn't like to be alone, but he's not that bad, if you get into a mutual understading with him you can really see a relationship working even if he is not romanticaly attract.

--Some people see Spectra as a Rooster, I see him as a Mother hen we are not the same.

Also Spectra darkest wish is to have 4 childrens because deep deep deep inside he likes childrens and wants the tradictional happy big family in vestal estandars but he has to keep up his icy edgy lord ass actitud for appearance

--She has Depression, but she doesn't remember why... in fact Alice has PTSD from the years she was in the Gulag but she doesn't remember does years because she block out does memories.

how do you feel about the way they handled xenocrates and his death in bb2? personally i think they could've done a lot more and i wanted to see a possible confrontation between him and gaius especially with how much history they have together, i feel like they wasted an opportunity by killing him off so easily like they did.

I really need to sit down and pick the writer’s brains and see their storyboarding at each stage in the series development because as a writer I fucking physically cannot understand why they wasted him??? so hard??? Listen it takes a lot to surprise me; I overthink a lot of shit and end up solving things before they’re revealed, but even I didn’t see Xenocrates being Erik Balthazar. And to have THE FIRST PERSON LITERALLY EVER TURNED BY THE FIRST VAMPIRE just... decapitated like it was Whack A Mole Vampire EditionTM was... frustrating to say the literal crumb least.

I have a lot of thoughts on the potential but, again, fic series, can’t say anything, it’s killing me.

The literal First Person Ever Turned ended up leading the largest, strongest, most successful effort to eradicate the species there has ever been. And... he just... died. Also I’m pretty sure if you didn’t buy the tapestry scenes his reveal was more than hella confusing... it was less impactful? Correct me if I’m wrong.

They just... there was so much they slept on and too much they focused on without needing to and he is one of them.
