This is not supposed to be a dig at Hopper or Mike. I don't have a problem with them imagining a possible future for her; that obviously makes sense. However, I do have a problem with the lack of voice El is given in the writing.

There are many things I wish the show had done better. But when it comes to El's character, I wish they had let her voice her wants and opinions more.

El is never given the chance to express her ideal future, what she wants to do when this is all over. Instead, the people around her are allowed to imagine her future for her, but the writing never affords her that same luxury.

I think that scene is just so heartbreaking because the one person she knows she's related to and knows that she's meant to have in her life, cause she sees Mike has a mom and Will has a mom, and she knows she has one and the fact that she's not there anymore is heartbreaking. —Millie Bobby Brown
