The Last of Us "Left Behind"

With only a handful of episodes left in the first season, The Last of Us decided to give us a glimpse into Ellies past. 

We start off with Ellie at the Fedra QZ, and she is training with other girls her own age. She gets into an altercation, with one of them sending her to receive 15 stitches. Later that night, her former roomie Riley breaks in and promises Ellie the most exciting night of her life.

This episode features Storm Reid as Riley and fully allows Bella Ramsey to show us her full range. Their moments of hanging out and trying to enjoy each others company were accompanied by intense dialogue about abandonment and the future. While it was slower paced than most of the season until this point, it really showed us why Ellie is the way she is and how alone she truly feels. 

It provides context to the earlier scenes where we see Ellie had been bitten and survived. In heartbreaking fashion, we learn Ellie and Riley had planned to just ride out whatever time they had left together before the infection took over. The implications of what came next by creative design we don't see are very sad to imagine. 

It is the beauty in the simplicity that keeps The Last of Us on top every week. The story is easy to follow. It keeps the pace moving, and it allows you to feel the highs and lows as these characters experience them. Right now, as we are being primed to see Ellie try and survive on her own while Joel recovers, this episode came at the perfect time. It shows her resiliency, her mental fortitude, and why she didn't want Joel to leave her a few weeks back.

This season has delivered in every way I had hoped and more. It may end up being my favorite scripted show of 2023. It is that damn good and I expect the final two episodes will be just as amazing and full of adventure.

Whumptober Day one: Let’s hang out sometime (Waking up restrained/shackled/hanging)

Fandom: (something new!) The Last of Us

Pairing: Ellie x Reader (I don’t know when Part Two starts, but we’re gonna pretend that there’s a period of time where Ellie and the reader go exploring bc Joel is helping with the city)

Warnings: Speak of david, violence, cursing, ptsd, branding

“Hey, hey-” she whispered while holding you tightly, “It’s ok; I’ve got you. they can’t hurt you anymore.”

Who’s idea it was to storm the old barracks, you couldn’t remember. Sitting on the bed, chained by your wrists and ankles in a locked cell definitely wasn’t something you would’ve thought you’d wake up to. 

“Wake up!” A low and angry voice jolted you out of whatever slumber you’d been in. The last thing you could remember through your pounding head was exploring an old military building. 

A palm meets your cheek, immediately flooding with pain. You hold your face, slowly sitting up and scooting back. “Who the fuck are you?” You growl, unsure how to go about this. You only had your tiny pocket knife on you, and they had guns.

The man who slapped you was burly, with many tattoos and had absolutely no hair. The men behind him held a rifle and a shotgun. “Your friend killed our leader a few years ago. We finally got news, and we wanted her dead. Do you know what he did for us?” The barrel of the pistol the bald man held pushed into your neck, and you gulped.

“David was all we had. He taught us how to survive. What we had to do in order to live after the world went to shit.” A fist collides with your cheek and brow, the pain from the earlier hit paling in comparison to the explosion of agony felt now. 

A soft groan escaped your lips, your arms tugging on your confines. “You see, we aren’t too fond of people like your girlfriend. That’s why we’re gonna hurt you nice and slow. She’s gonna know what we felt when we lost David.” 

“That and more,” the rifleman joked, but the bald sent him a glare, effectively shutting him up. 

“You all can go to hell,” you spat, a small smile crossing your lips. Anger blossomed on their faces, and the male with the shotgun leaves the room for a moment. 

“You’re really gonna regret coming here, bitch,” he chuckled, coming back in with a burning rod with a circle on the end of it. Your heart rate instantly picks up, memories flooding back from your boarding school days. They branded you like animals, and it was gonna happen again-

A searing pain erupts on your right rib, and you couldn’t contain the guttural cry of pure anguish. A cloth is stuffed into your mouth and taped to hold it in place. You thrash around, primal fear taking over. You weren’t going to let them do what others had. You couldn’t.

You aren’t sure what was happening. You couldn’t breathe, and your vision was going in and out. Everything was cold, and you knew your mind was blocking out whatever it was that they were doing. You were thankful now, but wouldn’t be later. 

Pain anchors you to the present from your wrists and ankles, your binds rubbing away at your skin. Gunshots echo through your haze, and your eyes slowly open, the gunmen lying on the floor in pools of their own blood. 

Ellie is standing beside you, unshackling your arms and ankles. Your breathing picks up further, as your mind doesn’t quite grasp that she’s here for you. To save you. 

“Get away!” You cry, grabbing at the moth-eaten blanket covering your nude form. When were you stripped? “Don’t touch me, don’t-” You whimper, curling in on yourself. You felt filthy. 

“It’s just me, Ellie- Y/n, look at me, please?” Her voice was tiny, and your eyes shot up. “Can I touch you?” She whispered, and you nodded slowly, before breaking down again. 

Immediately she moves to hug you, and you’re more than grateful. “Hey, hey-” she whispered while holding you tightly, “It’s ok; I’ve got you. they can’t hurt you anymore.”

Post-apocalyptic father-daughter duo

Why does this kind of dynamic work so well and so compelling to us as an audience? And all of them are not even the girls’ biological fathers, but rather their surrogates. 

I think it’s sweet that these men who have no biological (since they didn’t birth the kids) nor any social obligations (since the world went to shit) to take care of these girls, but they choose to do so. 

Can anyone reccomend other stories that revolve around this kind of relationship?   I just love it so fucking much.
