“Are you sure you want to do this?” Elijah asked Y/N as they stood outside the compound.
The last few days when Freya wasn’t teaching Henrik magic, Elijah was spending time with him and Y/N. But during that time, the rest of the Mikaelsons hadn’t met Henrik yet. After Elijah told the rest of his siblings the truth, most of them had been asking to meet the newest Mikaelson.
While they hadn’t sought out Y/N, Elijah assured his siblings that once he and Y/N decided it was safe, they would meet Henrik. Even Freya refused to give up the details her siblings would ask about.
Y/N sighed and looked down at Henrik who had been attached to Elijah’s side. “Whatever he is comfortable with. I know this is his family, but at the first sign of-”
“We’ll leave the moment he mentions anything.” Elijah promised her. “He is more important than any sibling of mine.”
Y/N gave Elijah a small smile before kneeling next to Henrik. “Ready to meet the rest of the family?”
Henrik nodded quickly. “Yes!”
“Alright. Your dad and I will be right there with you the whole time. If anyone or anything feels bad, you let me know, okay?”
“Okay.” He said with a nod. Y/N ran her hand through his hair and gave him a smile.
“Alright.” She stood up and let Elijah take the lead into the compound. As much as Y/N wanted to be relaxed about her son meeting the rest of his family, there were several things that made it hard to do.
For one, her family was still out there somewhere. Y/n was taking Henrik out of the protection she created at the hotel room. While Elijah gave her every reason as to why this would be safe, it didn’t stop her from worrying. Not with how much progress Henrik was making in his magic.
That worry had only intensified after Y/N and Henrik had gotten into an argument about working on his studies. Instead Henrik wanted to call Elijah and spend the day with him. While any other time would have been fine with Y/N, Freya had already been there trying to get him to focus. A tantrum led to a surge of power that came from Henrik that several other witches had felt. .
While Freya and Y/N had been able to get the attention off of Henrik, Y/N knew that this was just the beginning of it. It was why Elijah wanted to give them both some time to relax by introducing Henrik to the rest of the family.
As they walked into the courtyard, Freya met them with a grin on her face. “I was beginning to wonder if you changed your mind.”
“Mommy didn’t want to leave just yet.” Henrik said with a grin on his own face as he ran over and hugged Freya.
“Can you blame me?” Y/N asked with a shrug of her shoulders. She looked over at Freya hopeful. “Did you-”
“Yes. There is a spell in place.” Freya said ensuring Y/N that everything would be fine. “The only people that can come in are those that frequent the place.”
“Which isn’t many.” Elijah added. He took a hold of Y/N’s hand and squeezed it slightly before letting it go. “He’ll be safe here.”
“Maybe from outsiders,” Rebekah’s voice filled the air as she came down the stairs. “But from family, well, my nephew is about to be smothered in love.”
As Rebekah had walked up to them, Y/N kept her attention on Henrik and how he reacted to her. His eyes had widened at Rebekah’s words and walked right up to Rebekah hugging her legs. There were several chuckles as the adults took in Henrik's reaction.
“You just made his day.” Y/N said giving Rebekah a smile. “Being smothered in love is a favorite pastime of his.”
“Is that so?” Rebekah asked as she looked down at Henrik. She pulled away from him only for a moment before picking him up and pulling him into a hug as she kissed all over his face, earning a fit of giggles from him.
Y/N relaxed a little more with every passing second that Henrik enjoyed his time with Rebekah. He filled her in with the same stories Y/N had heard over a thousand times that always brought a smile to her face. Even as they sat down and just enjoyed the company, all eyes were on Henrik.
“Well would you look at this.” Klaus said as he entered the compound. “I leave for a few days and come back to an orphan lounging in the courtyard.”
Y/N’s eyebrow raised as she got up from her seat and went to stand before him. “May I remind you that this ‘orphan’ has saved your ass a time or two.”
The two glared at each other for a moment before a smile pulled at their lips. Klaus pulled Y/N into a hug and Y/N had happily hugged him back. Even after all these years things hadn’t seemed to change between the two.
“It really is good to see you again, Y/N.” Klaus said as he pulled away from her. “Now where is this nephew that I’ve heard so much about?”
Y/N nodded her head towards Elijah. Henrik had been planted between Elijah and Rebekah on the couch. “Because of your brother, Henrik has been hearing all kinds of stories about you and couldn’t wait to meet you.”
Elijah scoffed. “Not all conversations included him.” Y/N rolled her eyes and went back to her seat by the others.
“I guess I’ll be the judge of that.” Klaus said with a smirk pulling on his lips as he walked over to where Henrik had been sitting.
Just as she had with Rebekah, Y/N watched Henrik’s reactions to Klaus. While hesitant at first, by the way he was currently tucking himself into Elijah’s side, that changed the moment Klaus crouched in front of him.
“What stories has your father been telling you about me?” Klaus asked with a smile on his face as he took in his nephew. He wasn’t surprised by how much the child had looked like his brother. Even with some features from Y/N, Klaus knew there was no way anyone could deny that he was a Mikaelson.
Henrik sat up quickly as a grin pulled at his lips. “He said that you can turn into a huge wolf!” Again, there were smiles and chuckles that filled the air at his words. “And that you can be a pain.”
Klaus rolled his eyes. “Not as much of a pain as your mother was.”
“Hey!” Y/N said as she shook her head. “Don’t feed my child lies.”
Klaus chuckled. “Never, love. I’ve only ever told the truth.” Klaus ducked as a pillow came flying in his direction. Henrik laughed at the display in front of him. Klaus looked over at Elijah who had a grin on his face as he watched Henrik.
Klaus could see the same thing that he had felt with Hope. He could see that Y/N was willing to make things work. It was obvious she had still felt comfortable with the family as she had before. While there was a slight difference in things, even he knew that Henrik would be safe with family just as Hope had been.
For several hours they had stayed in the compound just as they were. Henrik was taking in everything he could from his Aunt and Uncle that he had just been introduced to. He jumped at the opportunity when Klaus offered to give him a tour of the compound. Rebekah had joined them to ensure that Klaus didn’t hog all the time with him.
“This is going well.” Y/N said with a small smile as she looked over at Elijah.
“I promised you it would.” Elijah said with a nod as he turned in his seat to face her. “You’ve seemed more relaxed since we’ve arrived.”
“This was my home once.” She noted as she looked around the compound. In the last five years not much had changed. It felt like she hadn’t left. “Your sisters were my best friends. Yeah your brothers annoyed the hell out of me from time to time, but this was home. And I missed that. Henrik hasn’t had that feeling. We’ve been moving here and there to ensure that he’ll be safe and here I am sitting in the one place that I loved for years feeling more relaxed than I have been in the last five years.”
Y/N hadn’t meant to get emotional but it just came out. Elijah stood from his seat and moved to sit next to her. He brought his hand around her shoulders and pulled her into his side. For the past several weeks he had watched Y/N always look over her shoulder. From the protection spells around the suite to Henrik needing a glamour spell, he could tell she had been afraid. All he wanted to do was comfort her in that moment.
“While I know you are very capable of taking care of yourself and Henrik, would it ease you more if I asked you to stay here?” He asked not only for her to feel safe once more as she had described but to also keep Henrik safe and closer.
There was a part of Y/N that wanted to accept his offer. She knew there were several rooms for her and Henrik to choose from. Her heart was fighting against the thoughts that were going through her head at the moment. Her heart longed to be close to the family she had been accepted into. But her head told her that if she let her guard down, it wouldn’t just be her that got hurt this time.
“As much as I know that would make things easier,” She said as she rested against his side. “I think for now it would be better for all us to stay where we are for now.”
Elijah would never admit it, but it had hurt him to hear that response. The last few weeks, while his main concern had been getting to know Henrik, he and Y/N had been getting along better. There was a part of him that held out the hope that he would be able to fix what he had broken.
“I understand.” He said with a small sigh. He had truly understood. No matter how much it had hurt him to say it. He wanted to argue with her and plead for her to stay in one of the free rooms upstairs. But he would never force her into something she didn’t want.
“Momma!” Henrik’s voice filled the air a moment later. Henrik began running down the stairs and Y/N moved away from Elijah’s side as she watched him. “You should have seen Uncle Klaus’s paintings.”
Y/N chuckled as she stood up leaving Elijah’s side and met Henrik halfway. “He’s got quite the collection. I haven’t seen what he’s added to it recently, but I’ve seen them some time ago.”
“He wouldn’t stop going on about how you let him paint.” Rebekah said as she came down. “There was only so much Klaus could show him before needing to run off.”
“Thank you for showing him around.” Y/N said, giving her a smile.
“Anytime.” Rebekah returned a smile. “In fact if you ever need me to watch him for an unforeseen amount of time, I’d be happy to watch him.”
“Anyone home?” Hayley’s voice carried into the room.
While there were plenty of emotions that wanted to cross her face at that moment, she couldn’t do it in front of Henrik. Hayley was a part of this family in many ways and if Henrik felt comfortable around her, she couldn’t deny him that. At least that was until she watched Henrik in the moments that followed.
When Hayley stepped into the courtyard, Y/N hadn’t missed the way Henrik tensed up the moment he saw her. As the woman walked closer to them, Henrik had moved himself behind Y/N, keeping a tight hold of her leg.
An eyebrow raised on both Rebekah’s and Elijah’s face as they took in Henrik. The whole time he had been calm and accepted anyone that had walked in to meet him. Y/N was the only one who understood what was happening. She had seen Henrik react that way a few different times and she learned to listen to that. It was his silent way of saying he had a bad feeling.
“I see everyone is getting a chance to meet Elijah’s son.” Hayley said with a smile on her face. She came to a stop in front of Rebekah and Y/N, hoping to introduce herself to him.
“Don’t.” Y/N said as she crossed her arms over her chest.
“I was just trying to introduce myself, that’s all.” Hayley said, shaking her head slightly.
Y/N watched from the corner of her eye as Elijah stood and joined them. She hadn’t cared about who was standing near her at that moment, she was going to say what she needed to. “While I know you have ties to everyone here, I am going to need you to stay away from my son.”
Hayley’s eyebrow raised. “I get you are still holding a grudge from what happened, but I would never do anything to hurt your son.”
A humorless laugh passed her lips. “This has nothing to do with that. I could make it all about that, but this isn’t about us. It’s about Henrik. Believe it or not, you will hurt my son. That’s the very reason why you’ll stay away from him. At any point in time he says you’ve been near him, you aren’t going to like what happens.”
“Is that a threat?” Hayley asked as she kept her attention on Y/N.
“Trust me Hayley.” Y/N said as she kept her eyes on Hayley. “It’s a promise that I’ll keep.”
“Okay,” Rebekah said, inserting herself between the two. “I think that’s enough of that. And need I remind you there is a child present?”
Y/N looked down at Henrik, a silent question being conveyed between the two. A simple nod of Henrik’s head was enough for Y/N to grab a hold of his hand and move around them, heading for the exit.
“Y/N.” Elijah said as he followed them.
Y/N stopped and turned around keeping herself between Henrik and Hayley at all times. “Henrik doesn’t feel safe. I’m sure you understand.”
“With Hayley?” He asked, wanting to be sure.
“I never want to be that person to say this, Elijah.” Y/N looked at Henrik before looking back at Elijah. “Henrik can’t be here when she is here. You’ll always be welcomed where we are staying, but he’s not going to feel safe here.”
“Tell me how I can fix this?” Elijah didn’t want her to leave.
“For Henrik or for me?” She asked, wanting him to be clear.
“For both of you.” He replied.
Y/N nodded as she tried to find the right words to say what was in her mind. But if she had to be honest, it was hard to find anything else than what was playing through her head. “She’s family, I get that. And I get she’s married to Jackson now. But this is where you choose between having your son safe and having her around. You know where we’ll be.”
With just enough time for Henrik to say goodbye to Elijah and with the promise that he’d stop by later, the two of them left. Henrik had been tense up until they had gotten into Y/N’s car and began driving back to their hotel. As she looked in the rear view mirror she could see Henrik looking out the window.
“How are you feeling?” She asked.
“Safe now.” He said with a nod.
“I’m sorry you felt unsafe.” She said as her eyes moved from the mirror to the front window. “I wasn’t expecting there to be someone there that made you feel unsafe.”
“Who is she?” Henrik asked as he looked towards the mirror where he could see Y/N looking back at him.
Y/N sighed. She never wanted to tell Henrik that story. She hoped what she told him would be enough. “She’s your cousin Hope’s mom.”
“Why is she bad?” He asked a moment later.
“I don’t know why she is bad to you.” Y/N admitted as she pulled into a parking spot and put the car in park. “I just know why she was bad to me.”
“Was she bad to dad?” There was so much curiosity in him. Y/N knew this was him trying to work through that feeling he had gotten.
“No.” She shook her head, turning to look over at him. “She likes your dad. I doubt there is ever a moment where she would turn her back on him. But if I’m being honest with you, she’s the reason mommy left.”
“You said you and dad were fighting when you left.” He reminded her.
She gave him a sad smile. “You’re right. We were fighting. But that’s because some things happened between dad and Hayley that hurt me. And that’s why I left.” She watched as Henrik’s face fell at her words. She reached over and took a hold of his hand. “No matter what has happened between us, we will always love you and be there to protect you. And I will make you this promise, I will make sure that Hayley doesn’t hurt you in any way.”
_____
“Can someone explain to me what just happened?” Rebekah asked, looking from Elijah to Hayley.
“That’s something I’d like to know.” Hayley responded.
“Henrik has a unique ability.” Elijah began. He knew in that moment that there was only one way for this to go. “One that can alert him of the intentions of anyone he comes into contact with."
"Wait a minute,” Hayley said as she took in the information. “So you’re saying your son just knows if someone will be bad to him? Are you sure this wasn’t something Y/N told him-”
“Don’t.” Elijah cut her off. “Whatever negative thought that you were about to speak about her, keep it to yourself. I have watched Henrik with not only my family but with strangers on the street. He stayed away from the people that I least expected him to because of his ability. The moment you arrived, my son was uncomfortable enough that he wanted to leave because he feared for his safety. Y/N has done nothing but encourage him to listen to it. From what I’ve witnessed, she has never planted a negative thought into his head about any of us."
Hayley shook her head softly. "I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have just assumed. I just wanted to meet your son. He is Hope’s cousin.”
“That’s the thing, Hayley.” He said as he took a step closer to her. “While you will always be welcomed here, I’d prefer you to call from now on before arriving to ensure Henrik isn’t here.”
“Seriously?” Hayley couldn’t believe it. She had been coming and going as she pleased. “My daughter lives here part time. That’s enough reason for me not to do that.”
“It is my intention to have Henrik stay here part time as well. But I will not have him stay where he doesn’t feel safe."
"Then maybe he shouldn’t stay here.” Hayley said as she crossed her arms.
“Hayley!” Rebekah said. “That is enough. The last time I checked you lived in the bayou with Jackson. While your presence is always enjoyed, this might be the time to listen to what Elijah is saying. This is a chance for Elijah to get to know Henrik. You do not live here anymore.”
Hayley rolled her eyes and looked over at Elijah. "Right. And I’m guessing family get-togethers are out of the question.”
“There will be some but,” Elijah nodded his head. “So long as you potentially pose a threat to my son, our family get-togethers will be…separated.”
