Days after getting her crutches, Val was still struggling with them. Human mobility aids could use some improvements, in her opinion. They were hardly convenient. It was hard enough just to keep her balance, and she couldn't really use her hands and walk at the same time. Still, she was determined to do things on her own. As a captain, she couldn't show weakness, and this was no exception.
Which was how she ended up alone at the grocery store, desperately trying to grab things off the shelves and put them in her basket without losing her balance. It was going alright, until she stopped paying attention as she was walking and one of her crutches hit the basket. It went flying out of her hand and down the aisle, her groceries spilling out of it onto the floor. She was lucky she hadn't gotten any produce yet. Fuck. If it wasn't embarrassing enough already, the crash of the basket hitting the floor had drawn the attention of some other shoppers. She took a step forward, trying to bend down to grab her basket without letting go of her crutches in the world's most awkward balancing act. When she looked up from her efforts, she found herself face to face with Elistra - as if the universe was reminding her that things could always get worse. Her eyes narrowed. "What do you want? I've got it, leave me alone."
