I have wanted to read some classics by Elizabeth Gaskell for the longest time and I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to pick North and South up as part of a readalong with some fantastic bookstagrammers. In fact, I ended up enjoying it so much that I’ve already bought or been gifted three more of her books and I can’t wait to explore her work further. ⁣ ⁣ North and South introduces the plucky heroine of Margaret Hale. Her father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience and the entire family is uprooted from their comfortable existence in Hampshire to a town in the North of England. For Margaret, it’s like nothing she has ever known and she begins to re-evaluate everything, particularly when she becomes aware of the poverty and political issues of the local mill workers. ⁣ ⁣ We also see the development of a fiery relationship between Margaret and the mill owner, John Thornton as she struggles with how the mill workers are treated and he in turn struggles with his feelings for a woman who drives him to distraction and infuriates him but he cannot help but admire. ⁣ ⁣ This is a beautifully memorable novel that explores important issues like workers rights, the role of women in society and class in a fascinating and very readable way. I loved that none of the characters were perfect. All had their flaws and eccentricities and it made me believe both the narrative and the author even more as a result.
