Balfas is reluctantly and against his will, engaged to Eliza. She's actually a sweetheart, he's just traumatized. They disagree on a lot: she'd like her own kids, Balfas doesn't want any more, and she expects him to move into her family, but he refuses to leave the life he's made in the Oasis, and fully considers this betrothal an insult to them both.

Balfas' awful family still feels like they own him, and have tried to marry him off. He's doing everything he can to fuck up those plans without getting too involved or letting any of them know where he is. Now, his "fiance" is actually a reasonable woman and might make a good wife for his poor traumatized ass, but he has NO intentions of meeting her. (Though she would be impressed that he's a successful businessman with four kids.)
