A quick throwback to the ASOIAF lineups! I'm working on the next coloring book while I'm queueing all this up and it's got me feeling a little nostalgic for this series.... maybe I'm tempted? We will see what happens, there's another big project lined up first... so it's a 'we'll see'.
These don’t quite line up…. But I was working with what I had at the time and setting these up for Insta with how their UX/UI is so [redacted].... small nightmare.
Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe
Finally in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of Book 1! We meet the wonderful Princess Yue and shenanigans ensue. I wanted the Northern and Southern Water Tribes to have related yet distinct tastes in fashion. Yue is still wearing a fantasy combination of Inuit/Yakut/Mongolian clothing but with a little bit of Great Plains Indigenous Regalia. Oh and her very important hair reference to Chinese "fairy maidens" (It's a Tang* Dynasty hairstyle associated with minor deities).

And for our Grand Finale of 2025's historical mermaids, the much requested: Iara, of Brazil.
In Tupi mythology there is a mermaid-like myth. A young woman named Iara is drowned, but returns as a half-fish maid known for drowning river-goers in retribution.
THIS MERMAID IS NOT IN THE mermaid colouring book! She's brand-new in comparison to the other mermaids in this series.

Qing Dynasty Mermaid
The Qing Dynasty of China started in 1644 and continued into 1912. In the later Qing Dynasty the liangbatou hairstyle evolved into it's tallest iteration called the dalachi, popularized by Empress Cixi.

Historical Mermaid Inspired by: Edo Japan
The Edo Period of Japan spanned from 1603 to 1868. The shamisen (three-stringed instrument she's illustrated with) was popularized in Japan in the early 16th century.

The Maasai are a group of tribes living across pasts of Kenya and Tanzania. Famous for their unique beaded decorations, specifically their used of layers of beaded necklaces, earrings and bangles.

Sámi Mermaid
The Sámi people are indigenous to the Northern most parts of Europe, specifically Finland, Norway, Sweden and parts of Russia. Dressed for the extreme cold of the arctic in brightly dyed fabrics and beautiful accessories, they are famous for their Reindeer herding.
