Tyler has left the building...
...and I’m sad.
I’ve been trying to write an appropriate post in appreciation of his work at the McKittrick, but I can’t really do him justice.
To put it simply, I never saw Tyler give less than his best in any role (including his Follies appearances.) And his best was pretty terrific. Tyler had a thoughtful take on the characters he played, and it was obvious that every choice was based on consistent motivation of the character. One way to see this clearly was that every once in a while, Tyler would subtly change the motivations he was portraying. I saw this most often back when he was playing Boy Witch full time. It seemed that every few weeks or so, Tyler’s Boy Witch would be subtly different, and yet the performance would remain completely consistent within the new motivation.
I am sad that he is no longer in the building, but hopeful that he will return quickly! When performers leave to work on other projects, I am so glad for them. They have the opportunity to strengthen their careers and to learn new skills and ways to express their hard work and talent. Tyler’s projects outside of the hotel will only make him a stronger performer. I don’t know if he will chose to return, but the powers-that-be would be lucky to have him back. If they are smart, they will keep an eye on his availability and beg him to return as soon as possible. One can hope...
