i think that @auntiehildatm made a really great comment like, 15 seconds before you did that actually addresses this:
to chime in- from what i’ve observed, top/bottom has largely been appropriated in a power exchange setting. often used to express what is actually dominant / submissive. the easiest answer, when it’s specifically not a m/m pairing? for me? is to call it what it is. dom / domme and sub. but that supposes that power exchange is an element of the relationship. and as you said, it’s not per se an appropriate alternative in general, away from power exchange.
the presupposition of power exchange is why i, personally, don’t think that dominant/submissive/switch can really be universally applied.

yyyyuuuuup. my thirteens and i have decided to just. kinda. retcon the perception filter part of that scene. let him suffer through the 20th century stranded, but safe from racist-based attacks.
