The Vengeance by Emma Newman
I liked the part where Morgane was a feral knife child the whole time.
I do think the writing leaned more towards YA than I was expecting. By which I mean everything was over-explained.
Also, for a book that says "vampires" on the cover, there were no supernatural elements until the last quarter-ish of the book.
HOWEVER. I did have fun. I liked the pirates with their silly ideas about voting and equal pay. Morgane was rude and straightforward the whole time. Her problem solving skills included 1) threatening people and 2) bribing them. Amazing. 10/10. No notes. She did learn the value of having someone with a different skillset along who could handle things like asking politely for directions and could do stuff like blend in. Morgane made choices at each turn about what to do, where to go, and who to trust. And she got it wrong sometimes!
She dips her toes into the murky waters populated by the aristocracy, gets a grasp on taxation, and firmly goes "wow this place sucks. I will not be staying." and honestly!! Good for her!!
There is quite a bit left unexplored here, though Morgane's personal quest wraps up nicely.
