This past Saturday we had a Sauvignon Blanc face-off. Two of the contenders:
90+ Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, 2012
Emmolo Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley, California, 2012
It is so much fun tasting such a dramatic difference between two bottles of the exact same varietal. Which would you prefer? Here are the descriptions of the two wines.
The 90+ is a wine that shouts out, "Hellooo summer!" You sip it imagining sitting on your porch with the summer sun setting...in other words, weather that we are all very much looking forward to. The flavor that you'll primarily get out of the 90+ is grapefruit. Slightly sweeter with a great amount of citrus.
Then we move on to the Emmolo. The Emmolo is much more controlled and structured versus the 90+. While the 90+ is very citrus-forward, the Emmolo is brings forward iron, wet stone and a hint of D'Anjou pear on the nose. The citrus flavors are more clementine and lemon versus grapefruit.
Both wines are excellent and serve two completely different palates and experiences.
Which would you grab to be your Sauvignon Blanc of choice?
