#wcw Words can't express how amazing it was to celebrate my girl @uzoaduba on her big wknd. Also w/ her sister @ohheyitschioma, who reminds me so much of mine I cld tackle her w/ love each time I see her. I'm glad this pic captured some of it. I'm so proud of Uzo. As an artist, a sister, & a friend. She is magic, & a gift of love to us all. Thankful that @LATimes decided to share this. It may be bc I'm from NY, or I like traditional things, but something about this - in print, in a newspaper - does it for me. In a world where #blackwomen attack each other on reality TV, this image is very familiar. I lk that here it's turned on its head, by a formidable actress - one of our greatest - lauded for showing us the purity & pain that comes w/ being marginalized against your will - by mental forces, by society, by life; fighting for the truth & love you see in this world / feel in your heart. This is Crazy Eyes - w/ her pacifier & sledgehammer - & why we all love her. Life flies by. You can't get any moment back & hold it. My favorite quote is by James Baldwin -- "No one can possibly know what is about to happen; It is happening, each time, for the first time, for the only time." Uzo is the other side of my coin. We met in the longest audition - 5 hrs of creating raps from parables, singing just learned songs for the creative team (competing back to back), then being paired together to come up w/ a skit in 30 min, using children's toys & props. I think I witnessed the genesis of Crazy Eyes here. It was for #Godspell - we were the last of the day & both hired. I decided to go do the #Broadway revival of #LesMiserables - had an amazing time & went on as the 1st Af-Am #Cosette in the show's history. When Godspell came to Bway, Uzo shattered my soul w/ her talent, grace & beauty. Now, she's shattering conventions & healing souls around the world. We won't know what's going to happen. But there are those we collect as we go. You make the journey together. My heart will remember this moment; grateful for this pic to help my head.
