the happily uncomfortable feeling of being so enraptured by one person that you have started wasting days and weeks of your life by wishing away the moments until you see them again. because in between every "i'll see you again this weekend" or "i'll be back soon," there is still life to be lived, life that you used to be able to cherish that you now ignore as you lay in bed, transfixed by the thought of the one person who can't be by your side right now until they are again. and when you wake up in the morning, wishing you could press fast forward and skip the next 24 hours of your life so you'd be 24 hours closer to them again, you might realize that you've finally come to understand what love means to you: love is when the thought of one day with someone becomes more important to you than the opportunity of the day you're about to live.

Because even though they would smile and nod along earnestly to all your old stories if you chose to tell them, the diners and basements and parking lots that changed your life could never mean as much to them as they mean to you. And in that moment you start to realize that as you grow older, the people who will come to mean the most to you will know the person you've become, but they’ll never truly understand what made you that way.
