I was just talking with Micah and Eric about my affinity for Chris Cohen (Los Angeles).  Lo and behold, there is a new release!  The lyrical content breaks my heart (as I’m sure it breaks Cohen’s).  His parents got a divorce after 53 years of marriage.  Read the Bandcamp page for yourself...none of this sounds easy.

Captured Tracks is again responsible for this gem.  I would like to mention that J Fernandez (Joyful Noise Recordings) and Pat Thomas (Empty Cellar Records) are the most recent purveyors of similar music.  It should be noted that Katy Davidson (Dear Nora) and Luke Csehak (Happy Jawbone Family Band) both helped make this album.

GRACE SINGS SLUDGE  “In Spite Of Doom”

Grace Cooper, one of the lead songwriters of the San Francisco band The Sandwitches, will follow up her previous three collections of solo home recordings as Grace Sings Sludge with a new album called “Life With Dick”, out June 2 via Empty Cellar. We’ve already heard the lead single “A Man Doesn’t Want” and now she’s premiering another album track called “In Spite Of Doom”. Listen above.

Swiftumz received a shout-out here back in 2017. They had released a cool 7" on Fruit & Flowers with a song about the Golden State Warriors.

Swiftumz (San Francisco, California) has been the vehicle for the music of Christopher McVickers for well over a decade. Now, SF label Empty Cellar Records is releasing the new LP which features McVickers joined by a cast of friends: Kelly Stoltz, and members of The Aislers Set and The Bananas.

This reminds me a bit of Sonny & The Sunsets and Dick Stusso.

Frank Ene is a Berkeley based musician/multi-instrumentalist who excels in "literate" pop. In fact, the Bandcamp page for this release states, "No Longer is a suite of six absorbing, patient reveries on conflicted concupiscence and encroaching darkness by Berkeley songwriter Frank Ene, who composed the material in a period of solitude following the demise of his noise-pop group Pure Bliss."

Ene immediately brings to mind one of my favorite musicians of the last 4-5 years - Murray Lightburn (The Dears). The Bandcamp pages for his various releases also mention Serge Gainsbourg, The Fresh & Onlys, Nick Cave, and Love.

This album was released by Bay Area label Empty Cellar Records.

Pat Thomas (bassist for Cool Ghouls) doesn’t look anything like his music sounds.  The picture on the Bandcamp page for his new release, “I Ain’t Buyin’ It” on Empty Cellar Records, looks kind of like Justin Timberlake.  But this music is firmly rooted in 1960s/70s pop.  There are so many sounds here - The Who (”Sell Out” era), Talking Heads, The Kinks and The Beach Boys.

I would imagine that another San Francisco musician, Chris Cohen, loves this music.  This is one of my favorite Empty Cellar releases in some time.
