I came across iji the other day, liked the cover and gave it a listen. The slightly warbly voice made me immediately think of a cross between Daniel Johnston and Matthew Sawyer. So I clicked through to the release and was really blown away by who plays on this album.

Zach Burba (the songwriter here) is a longtime musician who has played with Katy Davidson in Dear Nora. Katy returns the favor by playing on "Automatically". But so does Adrienne Lenker (Big Thief), Luke Csehak (The Lentils), Erin Birgy (Mega Bog). And that's just a partial list of the collaborators on "Automatically".

Burba and iji are based in Los Angeles. This is being released by We Be Friends, a label located in Queens, New York.

I was just talking with Micah and Eric about my affinity for Chris Cohen (Los Angeles).  Lo and behold, there is a new release!  The lyrical content breaks my heart (as I’m sure it breaks Cohen’s).  His parents got a divorce after 53 years of marriage.  Read the Bandcamp page for yourself...none of this sounds easy.

Captured Tracks is again responsible for this gem.  I would like to mention that J Fernandez (Joyful Noise Recordings) and Pat Thomas (Empty Cellar Records) are the most recent purveyors of similar music.  It should be noted that Katy Davidson (Dear Nora) and Luke Csehak (Happy Jawbone Family Band) both helped make this album.

Somehow missed this Dear Nora album when it came out in October. The arrangements are restrained and intimate with unexpected textures, and it is always enjoyable to hear Katy Davidson's unique perspective and beautiful singing. Chris Cohen provides an excellent intro text that captures what is so distinctive about Dear Nora records: "To me, the great strength of Dear Nora’s music is that it takes stock of its time and place and captures something that we can revisit later. The lyrics on human futures are written from multiple perspectives but they come from a world of people who travel great distances and are faced with too many options. Katy writes about our being incessantly surveilled and barely tethered to the physical universe and the life around us. Observation of the everyday and of our endlessly referential pop culture serves as a way to understand personal experience through poetic language..." This is out on Orindal Records.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Katy Davidson AKA Dear Nora. Originally from Arizona, Katy has been making music for decades now under the name Dear Nora, starting with the Make You Smile 7" in 2000 on Magic Marker Records. They took a long break from the moniker after 2008's Three States, but picked it up again with 2018's Skulls Example which is one of the best albums Katy's ever recorded. Their new album, Human Features, will be released on Orindal Records at the end of October, and it's fantastic!

This came out almost exactly a year ago. It was on many best-of 2018 lists. The lead track, White Fur...c’mon. Greaaattt. And while Dear Nora and Katy Davidson have received several other mentions and posts here (most recently the Chris Cohen album on which she plays), I realized Skulls Example never got an official introduction here about the same time I learned that this record has already received a re-mix treatment -- check out the remix of White Fur by Stephen Steinbrink. Zach Burba plays bass -- check out Iji. A great listen for the summer on our doorstep.

Twentynine Palms, CA -- Brighten up your morning with Dear Nora’s newest track “Simulation Feels”. There’s a soft lightness to this track that really gives it such a pretty whimsical sound. I really dig the groove on this track, from the drum rhythm to the funky little guitar riffs. “Simulation Feels” is just over 2 minutes long but there’s a freshness to this song that makes you want to put it one repeat over and over again.

“Simulation Feels” is taken off of Dear Nora’s upcoming album Skulls Example out May 25 via Orindal.
