I did a psychoanalysis of Crona and Maka for a class last semester. If you look at the ongoing theme of "fixing what the previous generation broke," Maka's a corrective attachment for Crona & Soul is her support (a very traditional family dynamic).
It's also important to note that- to a certain extent- Soul and Crona are foils for each other. It's repeatedly shown that Soul identifies and empathizes strongly with Crona on several points, especially relating to their struggles with madness and shared social anxiety, but the way they handle their similar issues is markedly different. Soul is inspired by Maka to want to change and overcome these things, and does so by finding the strength within himself; Crona relies on Maka to "fix" or "save" zher, and is heavily dependent on her to maintain zher stability, until the eleventh hour when zhe takes a page out of Soul's book (even makes the direct comparison between them) and uses Maka as inspiration rather than a crutch.
And although Crona had the strength to make that final stand because there was literally no other choice- it was do or die, really- it's really impossible to say whether, if things had been different, Crona would be able to make that kind of self-reliance a consistent habit, or whether zhe would continue to depend heavily on Maka in a very parent/child kind of dynamic.

Relationships that explicitly deals with the theme of LOVE, but not romantic love are really so important.
Exactly. And Soul Eater has such an amazing array of so many different types of relationships based in non-romantic love, and it's super, super important to explore other types of love than romantic. (But that being said, if anybody says Kim and Jackie aren't super super gay for each other I will give you my most profoundly evil death glare.)

Ahhh, this is really great! Now i’m thinking about how the Rhaegar/Elia marriage differs so much from the traditional Targaryen-Martell alliance. In the historical texts, I get this very distinct sense that the Dornish are like the Targaryens in that they’re outside of traditional andal law, although of course the reasons for that vary greatly.
ahh, yes, definitely! Dorne-Targaryen alliances interest me a lot =u= and I'd really love to see more of a treatment of the politics and whatever else that led to Rhaegar and Elia's marriage (and what their relationship was like, and how Elia felt in King's Landing, and their relationship with their kids, and so on...)(but please don't make Rhaegar a jerkass Mr. Hypothetical Text, pls pls I like Rhaegar ;A; I just want a nice happy catpile with him and Elia and JonCon and Oberyn pls u____u).
I mean I think it ties into a certain sort of diminishing of Dorne's status over the years from when it was an independent kingdom (I am very Pro Dornish Independence!! and/or Pro Ruling Queen Myrcella ok :3) - it's still outside now, but not really outside in any sort of prestigious way, except maybe to an extent among say the Targs mostly because of historical memory more than anything else... and yet you still get the match made between them instead of with e.g. bby Cersei! it kind of makes me wonder about how the Targaryens might have been continuing to construct themselves as outside Westerosi/Andal culture, and seeing contiguities with these other people who at least are also Essosi in origin and many of their traditions. (this is also why seeing in tpatq, the Targ marriages to a Hightower and an Arryn, of all people, threw me for a small loop when I first read it, actually.)
ummm yeah idk Targ/Martell houseshipping 4ever :)))))
