Relationships that explicitly deals with the theme of LOVE, but not romantic love are really so important.
Exactly. And Soul Eater has such an amazing array of so many different types of relationships based in non-romantic love, and it's super, super important to explore other types of love than romantic. (But that being said, if anybody says Kim and Jackie aren't super super gay for each other I will give you my most profoundly evil death glare.)

Also consider: Spirit becoming gamekeeper just to be closer to Maka, (she’s not happy).
But of course. (It doesn't hurt that this allows him to spend more time in the company of the gorgeous Herbology teacher, Miss Blair.)

To be honest, I think part of the problem is that people go into this show with such high expectations - I’m not setting myself up that it’ll give me everything I want, because it’s not going to, but I do hope that it’ll at least keep the quality level it has now, and I’ll be content.
I agree that ATLA was a really effective blend of a goofy child-like humor and tone (which is what it’s initially judged by), turning into a very beautiful story with great character development, depth, and subtle maturity and philosophy. I wasn’t at all expecting to take it as seriously or like it as much as I ended up doing - which only made it more effective, because it was unexpected. I’ll admit though, even if the writing/story isn’t quite at the same level, I do kind of enjoy the more serious tone. It’s a nice contrast.
To be honest, I think the show already has improved since Book 1, in that it’s strongest element - Korra - has become so much better in Book 2, and that’s despite the fact that I think Book 1 was overall more consistent. After the first season, I was mildly interested in Korra (I personally always liked her, even when she was ~unlikable), but was invested in the story mainly because I liked the franchise. After Book 2? 90% here for Korra - just Korra. She’s definitely one of my favorite characters of this franchise - probably of all time.
I also like Tenzin a lot. IMO, the strongest parts of the show so far are Korra, Tenzin and their relationship - which makes sense, as they’re pretty much the characters who’ve been developed most. So long as these two are even remotely the characters they’ve been so far, I’m invested.
It’s kind of ironic, though, because I genuinely think Korra is a really great character, easily rivaling ATLA’s characters - yet I (still) often see people complain about her.
The bolded part is just so true! I initially saw ATLA as just a light-hearted childish cartoon that will just kill my boredom and gawd it was beyond my expectations and it was a wonderful and emotional experience for me. You summed up my feelings on the show. I hope Lok's Book 3 combines the good in Book 1 and the strength of Korra's character in Book 2.
Agree with Tenzin-Korra, I think even if it's not as tearjerking yet, it's on par with Zuko-Iroh.
Speaking of Korra, I'd put her below Zuko in best character development and complexity overall- and that's just halfway her story. She's already bested Aang, Katara and Azula IMHO.

I mean IMO eps like CoTL has exclusive mutual romantic implications but you can read them as sibling-like and keep the core aspects of the relationship. Katara just NEVER treated Aang as a child. Also Zuko and Katara fighting over Aang is canon lmao.
tbh you can interpret any and all of relationships katara has with anyone because i just in her nature to be kind affectionate loving and just generally motherly but because she just really likes aang (if you interpret kataangs relationship as romantic or no you gotta admit katara loves that little guy) so she tends to take the way she show affection to another level and because katara obviously wants zukos D aang and kataras relationship has to be down played to platonic mother/son love
also i really hate the whole "aangs too immature for katara! hes too young!" because that's. the fucking. point. you cant just have the main protagonist just jumo into a story perfect and fully developed as a character
during the first book aang was a 12 y/o kid that loved fun and goofing around and throughout the first book he had the bad habit of goofing off instead of doing what he was supposed to do (example that come to mind are when he was playing with a butterfly instead of concentrating on getting katara captured to save haru) but after the siege of the north he matured and really got down to the business of learning the elements as fast as he could and trying his dman hardest to save the world and coincidentally (but not at all coincidentally) that's when aang and kataras relationship really started to get into the romantic side of things
and actually that reminds me of something you said in one of your metas about how katara loves heros and i just think that fact that the first time we get katara having more the friendship feelings for aang is when he has just saved a village from being destroyed by a volcano and that when we first see katara get really touchy feely with aang and when they have their fist kiss is not so long after aang saves the NWT and defeats a entire fire nation fleet with in minutes really highlights that fact because katara does NOT like bad boy she likes the good guys that saves the world (oh and the fact tht she was obsessed with the avatar coming and saving the world when she was little also proves it and maybe even was the cause of katara loving the hero)
shineyavatar replied to your post “I have to say this, the fact that you are a Ginny stan immediately makes you like 500% more awesome in my book. I have emotional scars from the way the HP fandom (and even the damn movies) treats her. Ginny is a flawless boss ass bitch and people need to deal. lbr the only valid Ginny criticism is that she didn't get to kill a horcrux, and that's on JKR tbh.”
Yes IMO it's kinda similar to how the ATLA fandom treats Mai. Non-major female character who makes a beta-couple with a male fandom bicycle seems to automatically make you a fandom victim. Also they both have a+ snark and very low bullshit tolerance.
Mm, I'd call it similar to how the ATLA fandom treats Aang, actually. In this case, Harry is Katara, Hermione is Zuko, Ginny is Aang... and I guess that makes Ron Mai, which is literally the greatest mental image I've ever had because now I'm picturing Ron with razor-cut black hair and a lot of knives and it requires a great deal of self control not to break down in hysterical laughter.
Re Katara: yes, people need to stop telling women what to do or deem them less for making choices about their own lives. Now, there is clear evidence that Katara did ~more than being a wife/mother, but she had every right to be only that. Just as she stood up for her right to fight, she would stand up for her right to focus on her family. I hope a comic will eventually give us a Katara story, but even now she's shown as capable, powerful, intelligent, influential; advising Aang and by herself.
Exactly. This is why I don’t like extreme points. Even when you are fighting for women’s rights, if you reached an extreme point, you’re starting to decide what should women do to prove their value. What is the difference between you and misogynists now?
People just wants to see what they want to because of their shipping choices. In The Promise, we saw that not just she changed Aang’s mind, she also kicked some sense into Earth King as well and had a direct effect in colonies' future by doing so. I admit she in The Search she was at sidelines but rest of the gang was at sidelines as well. It was Zuko - Azula comic not Katara. Now we have a comic about Toph and a short comic about Sokka-Suki and considering these comics will likely continue, I’m sure we will eventually get a Katara centered comic.
