August 22 finally rolled around. All of the waiting finally over: EMT-Intermediate class started!
I headed over to the campus a little after 17:00 (5 pm) to make sure I could find the school, parking, etc. Class didn't start until 18:30, but I like to be early. I also like to put in an "idiot pad" to my time, to account for any possible MVAs I may come across.
Found the school just fine, parked, and walked in the front door. As I walked in, two guys greeted me buy saying "thank god you're here!" That's a nice feeling!
OK, so they assumed I knew where we would be meeting. Which I did. Somehow they inferred by my physical appearance that I would be a classmate of theirs (Class C uniform, complete with radio).
Found the classroom, grabbed a seat, and read until things got started. 28 students in the class, all but 1 with an EMS/fire/rescue squad.
It was a fairly standard first night, I guess. We went over personal introductions, expectations for the class, policies, etc.
60 classes. 50-ish hours in the hospital. 100+ hours on an ambulance. What have I gotten myself in to?!
I have a ton of stuff to do in the next month! Health tests, physical, vaccinations, drug test. Need to buy supplies, more books, get a school ID. My head was swimming by 21:00!
I think each and every one of us was in precisely the same head space. If my other classes with this college are anything to judge by, I'm going to be just fine. It's a lot right now, but one step at a time.
