For the writer's ask meme: 9 and 34.
9. Favorite/least favorite tropes?
Favorite: Honestly I’d direct you to this list because I love all of these.
Least favorite: all the tropes surrounding female characters tbh >.> A good example would be physically tough = strong female character.
34. Unpopular writing thoughts/opinions?
Uh said is not dead and all rules are meant to be broken. Those aren’t the most unpopular things in the world but I know a lot of people don’t think that way so.
Ask The Writer
Writer's ask: 31 and 49.
31. Top five favorite books in your genre?
What is my genre is the question? Um, as far as Young Adult books go, I really like:
1. The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling (Ridiculously formative for me, I still reread them and consider my Hogwarts House to actually mean something.)2. I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson (I actually read this fairly recently and fell entirely in love with it. This book is the right way to do purple prose.)3. The Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan (Another series, sue me. I devoured these growing up and they were a good gateway into horror.)4. Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman (It’s been awhile since I read this, but this is the first book I can actually remember being genuinely jealous of a writer, because he juggled all of these themes and subplots so effortlessly. I would revisit it to see how it compares in my adult brain, only I lent it out to a friend and never got it back ...)5. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket (Listen, lots of YA books are series. But the narrator voice in this is something I aspire to and will never, ever accomplish)
I think a special mention also goes to the Fear Street series by R. L. Stine. Reading them now, they’re ridiculously campy (which is a compliment, in my opinion), but they’re also the books that kept me reading through middle and high school. I’m pretty sure I read two or three of these a week back in the day.
49. Favorite fictional world?
Oh, man. The Harry Potter universe, no question. I am a giant nerd!
BEFORE THE BEGINNING
Yay! Thanks for the ask! :DBEFORE THE BEGINNING — three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project
A tangle of metal, fabric, and glitter rested on the floor at the feet of a recently-bandaged Sol who wasn't at all contrite about his failed attempt at aviation. Blythe sighed and, knowing she'd regret the question, asked, "Solei, what in Petra's name were you thinking?"
"I'm thinking if I add more glitter they’ll work perfect!"She really shouldn’t have asked.
(Sol’s wings are briefly mentioned in book 1 but get rebuilt in book 2 to be a slightly larger plot point. It’s a good thing Blythe’s a healer lol.)
Not so much a question as a 'thank you'. Just read your interview at Asexual Artists and wanted to thank you for introducing me to the term 'autochorissexual'. Fits me to a T and at 41 I never knew there was a 'label' that fit so well. So thank you. And also: awesome interview! There's a good chance I'll want to read your asexual romance when it comes out!
Thank you! Honestly, I’m 46, and I’m still discovering which labels fit me the best -- and I’m realizing that those labels can fluctuate and shift, sometimes by the day.
And all credit to @neverwhere for helping me categorize my own kink-leaning-asexual feelings in her post here: https://justlovereviews.com/2016/10/27/aaw-2016-bdsm-asexuality/ She’s the inspiration for my upcoming book.
For no excuses: FIRST
FIRST — the first two sentences of my current project
I mean you can already read the whole first chapter of Songbird so I’m gonna do it for the other two!!
Reversed Star:
The First Intergalactic War changed everything. Even years later, people and planets still live with the scars.
The Fair Folk
Rose Armont knew that it was a bad idea to stay in the forest after dark.
This week had been unseasonably warm, warm enough to trick her into thinking that Spring was just around the corner. But as the light began to fade, the Sun’s warmth faded with it, leaving only the unmistakable bitter chill of a winter not quite finished.
Yeah I did the first three sentences of The Fair Folk because it just didn’t sound right with the first two lol.
Writer's ask: 7 and 26.
7. Favorite/most inspirational book?
Wow, um, I Am Malala was honestly amazing, it’s one of the first books that actually did directly make me want to do stuff and it was great to read. Favorite is too hard a question to answer.
26. What’s the most research you’ve ever put into a book?
A full historical story hasn’t happened yet, though I deeply want it to, I plan for it to happen, whatever it’ll be, but I’ve put a lot of effort into Victorian England in my Peter Pan story as well as the Seminole people which I used for Tiger Lily’s village in the same one. Also did a lot of research on the Lakota culture and how death affects the body for my paranormal revenge story.
For the ask meme: 11 and 21.
Wow, I’m sorry this took so long, I don’t like answering asks on mobile. Thanks for sending it in!
11. What are you planning to work on next?Right now, I’m doing some outlining for Destined for Grayness. It’s a lot of very badly drawn maps and notes about each of the different places. I’m also outlining TVOMS, but that is going slower than I’d like it to. During the first few months of the new year, I’m going to go through The Lost Crown and do some editing/rewriting of that.
21. What aspect of your writing are you most proud of?I already answered that here.
Thanks for the ask! Everyone else feel free to ask me something (writer ask meme) (there’s also this list) (talk about meme)!
