And that's a super fair question!! I'm not sure when exactly I'll have a chance to work it in on either side but I've tried to slip in a couple of nods to their upbringings on both sides of the AU. But I do also generally fall into the camp of them both being deeply lonely people.
I think the spoiler lite version is something along the lines of, I agree with Wifies more about Derek's upbringing than Avery's lmao. Like I'm sorry man but Avery's absolutely garbage view of himself in DAWTE was not fostered in a happy home environment.
And for those interested I'll put my full HCs under the cut bc I've definitely been chewing on their family situations for a hot minute.

So these may be subject to change but this is mostly what I have in mind for them.
Derek
Had a pretty rocky home life for his first like. Eight years because his parents were just. Deeply toxic together. His mom did her best with him but before his father passed when he was a kid he overheard a lot of screaming fights. Both of his parents were tying to do right by him but they just. Weren't good for each other etc.
After his dad passed his side of the family basically dropped Derek entirely and his mother's side stepped up to be sure their daughter wasn't raising Derek completely alone.
His upbringing wasn't always stellar even after that because Derek definitely reads a bit autistic coded to me and that feels like it always causes friction with family members, so there was that but otherwise his grandparents and his mother were immensely invested in him.
Unfortunately, his grandparents were on the older side and ended up passing away when he was just getting his bearings in college, and his mother ended up following soon after. A bad time all around and a huge factor to him dropping out beyond just being bored.
Derek definitely still has some more distant family that he could reach out to but they're waaay less involved with him.
Avery
Military brat!
I agree with Wifies that his family definitely fell more along the nuclear lines structure-wise. But that's pretty much where the similarities end for me.
He's low/no contact with his entire family because they're a bit of a wreck at the end of the day.
His father isn't evil or anything but was a mean drunk when he was home and put in a lot of legwork to discourage his son's ""girly"" interests and behaviors like enjoying anything artistic or god forbid wanting to wear anything with fun colors on it.
His mother was more just. The type to side with her husband on anything. Whether or not she actually agreed. She's a very 'conflict-averse' person which means she isn't willing to stand up for her kids even when they're being hurt.
He's definitely got slightly better relationships with his siblings but. They don't hear from each other often and aren't involved after most of them flew the nest so I still haven't decided how relevant they are.
Long ramble to also say that Avery's nervous cleaning quirk is absolutely from his upbringing.
I'm also not entirely sure how well it came across but the general "light sleeper" talk with both of them in chapter 5 of ENaY was meant to be a small nod to both of them having, a rough time. Angry parents will make you a light sleeper and a good liar smh.

To answer your question uh, yes but also no? I think of it as basically diverged timelines. They're one thing up until chapter 5 of ENaY, and then they split into two different paths.
So, same universe, different stories if that makes more sense, the two different fics have no actual bearing on each other after chapter 5 of ENaY!

What kind of dates do you have planned for Slimeknight? Like both before they admit they have feelings for one another (so basically hangouts with an emotional charge and tension to them) and for when they do end up together.

As far as dates for the lads go, I have some fun proper dates in mind for them once they're together. And while they're in the process I think a good few 'dates' are just going to end up being errands in a trench coat lol.
But who knows! They ended up in the same town but maybe they have old hangouts to share with each other, or local places that only they know about.
One version of them might even have a bigger trip planned together!
