Elliot Andeville: A bookish young man who seeks to learn about demons and expose the wrongdoings of Heaven.
Zhirael: The Demon Lord Elliot sells his soul to in order to obtain information. Surprisingly affable and mostly harmless.
LaPlata Costina: A Higher Angel who was stripped of her power and cast from Heaven for unknown reasons. Friends with Zhirael.
Harold "Harry" Meyer: Elliot's blunt and outspoken childhood friend. Kind of a bully, but genuinely cares about people.
Mercedes Thurston: Another one of Elliot's childhood friends. She's intelligent and a good leader, but also stern, stubborn, and hard to get along with.
Filael: A coquettish Lesser Demon who is an acquaintance of Zhirael's. Pretends to be human at night and runs a cafe for fellow glamoured demons.
Arnaldo "Arnie" Andeville: Elliot's loud and vivacious grandfather who never stops telling stories about the time he survived an event where part of the mortal plane collapsed into Hell. To be fair, that's a fairly exciting story.
Clemence Meriwether: The local librarian. Perpetually fidgety and anxious, but she unconvincingly attempts to be authoritative anyway.
Barry Hodgson: The local newspaper editor. Red-faced, passionate, and motivated, but also secretly extremely paranoid and stressed 24/7.
Vernon Andeville: Elliot's younger brother. A baby.
1. Harry and Mercedes get married. Filael turns into an animal and shows up at their doorstep. What happens next?
I think this might actually happen in canon, aside from Filael rusing her way into their household by pretending to be something adorable and fluffy. Probably to steal all of Harold's cash.
2. Elliot steals something from LaPlata. How did it happen, what is stolen, and do they give it back?
Elliot gets horribly smited even if all he steals is a french fry off of her plate. Stealing from bitter higher beings is generally a poor idea.
3. Zhirael must adopt Clemence or Arnie. Whom do they pick and how does it work out?
Definitely Arnie. Zhirael likes to listen to people ramble, so he probably likes old people a lot. That aside, Clemence would probably pass out at the thought, and Zhirael isn't as interested in causing others agony as his job title implies.
4. Filael and LaPlata start a band. They need two more members. Whom do they pick, what do they name the band, and what sort of music do they play?
They pick Zhirael and Elliot, because they're all friends anyway. All of them have skills when it comes to classical music... aside from Filael, who breaks out the electric guitar in the middle of Elliot's emotional violin solo. Filael changes their name every 5 seconds and no one cares enough to dissuade her.
5. Mercedes and Arnie crash a carnival and get arrested. What did they do?
Arnie has probably destroyed half of the games through his sheer power and hot-bloodedness, and in the midst of yelling at him for it Mercedes gets arrested alongside him for disturbing the peace. Arnie is no longer allowed at carnivals.
6. Barry and Harry are trapped in a small space for a long time. Vernon is their only hope of rescue. Where are they trapped, and what happens next? Do they get free? How?
They're probably trapped in a closet due to a wacky babysitting incident that ended with a Tom-and-Jerry-esque chain of events that got a bunch of junk stuck in front of the door. They talk about how their names rhyme while Vernon chews on everything in the room.
Elliot regrets his decision to trust either of them with children.
7. Vernon and Zhirael decide to play a practical joke on the others. What do they do?
Not much, as much to Zhirael's displeasure it turns out babies are poor strategists.
8. Elliot takes over the world. Why? And why is Clemence against it?
Simple: the easiest way to gain the knowledge he desires and expose the corruption in Heaven is to just take over everything himself! Clemence is against this because she doesn't really like dealing with people in positions of power, much less people she (probably) fired at one point for consorting with demons too much.
9. Arnie betrays Mercedes for Mercedes' own good. Why?
She doesn't know a good carnival party when she sees one, obviously.
10. Vernon is depressed. What does Elliot do to cheer them up?
Peek-a-boo. Lots of peek-a-boo.
11. Barry and LaPlata find a precious artifact that has Clemence's name on it, although anyone can use it. The artifact has the power to control one person's mind. What do they do with it?
LaPlata immediately uses it to make Barry forget he saw anything, then proceeds to keep it locked away somewhere. That's not anything someone should be allowed to possess.
12. Filael must choose between saving the thing they value most or letting Harry die. What happens?
She doesn't know Harry at all, so definitely the former! rip harry
13. Barry decides to sacrifice themselves. Clemence tries to dissuade them. Filael agrees with Barry. LaPlata volunteers to go in Barry's place. What's going on?
Clearly the precious artifact has gotten into the wrong hands and someone must sacrifice themselves to destroy it. Barry subconsciously feels guilty but doesn't understand why (since his mind got erased), and LaPlata naturally blames herself. As usual, Filael has no attachment to anyone here and couldn't care less what they do.
So, in summary, Filael constantly wins out! It was a good day for her.
i’m a little self-conscious now though that i’m starting to make endael too similar to nolan, especially in terms of their relationships with zhirael (though the fact that nolan has any familiarity with zhirael at all is kind of a spoiler but Whatever). nolan is already pretty well-established as he is my favorite donut (he is in an unending battle with dicro but lately keeps narrowly edging him out bc nolan cannot be stopped and also asthenopia is my fav) so i’ll have to work on distinguishing endael from him more in the weeks before nanowrimo
i spent all day at school yesterday planning out septicemia’s backstory and making characters bc i figured i might do that for nanowrimo, and then the second i got to work i was just like “but wait what if i wrote endael’s instead because i am demon trash”
i’m glad bc i have a shitton of inspiration for endael stuff now but man i just.... really couldn’t get into septicemia’s stuff. idk why i mean a story about a vessel for unearthly beings driven to exact revenge on the people who made her that way in the first place is pretty aesthetic but i just couldn’t get myself to care?? like i had fun making character designs (that i will scan eventually) for people but i couldn’t really figure out where i was going. like adding just one more character outside of septicemia and her vessel pal viremia felt like it was too much and i wasn’t sure what i was doing with anyone?? i didn’t really feel like i could write her story in 50k words because there’s just not enough to say. ya get vessel’d, you’re filled with unholy beings, you get twitch plays pokemon’d into destroying things, your Probably GF can’t physically handle her unholy beings and ceases to be, then an all-conquering overlord picks you up and puts you in a position of power. sounds like it could be pretty long but in my mind it’s always been a pretty short process bc it happens in a fairly small window of time maybe idk
the other huge, glaring problem is that i realized that septicemia has Literally No Personality. like everything i’ve written for her has always relied on the fact that it’s after she’s been possessed for an extended period of time, so she has all of these fragments of personalities floating around and is currently struggling to piece together who “septicemia” really is, if she even exists anymore in the first place. i really don’t know what kind of person she was before the whole vessel dealio and more importantly it seems that i can’t really get myself to care
i guess the moral of the story is that some backstories are just meant to be charahubbed and other backstories are novel material?? or that when i’m in a phase where i can only think about asthenopia i should just embrace that
i am excited to endael it up though because i already have a lot of plans which is good bc i don’t usually plan for nanowrimo and that always ends up catching up to me. endael’s story is nice bc it has a foregone conclusion (him becoming the demons) and solid endings tend to be something i struggle with. i always change around endings to my stories bc subconsciously i never really want them to end and my characters change so much all the time that it changes how conflicts get resolved (if they do at all), but with a character’s backstory it’s a lot less intimidating because even if i make one thing Solid and Permanent, it’s just some side-character’s backstory ya feel me?? it’s also fun to put thought into a character who i haven’t thought too much about
