Drift Away (Natasha x reader)
summary- after nat died reader has trouble coping. (inspired by Drift Away- steven universe)
“Happy. But not only was she always happy; she was also beautiful, strong, and brilliant.” Your voice echoed through the graveyard. Hand on her casket and tears down your face. It was all too real. She was truly gone. Your heart hurt, your head hung heavy, and everyone saw. Her death was tragic, but you had felt it coming. She had started drifting after the blip, at least that’s what Peter called it.
She had started to dull. Her smile not reaching her eyes, her laugh weaker, her touch colder. And it had hurt.
“We’d all lost, but Natasha knew that there would be a way to fix it. If she didn’t I like to believe that she did.” I had noticed her drift away.
“The mission was planned perfectly. She had figured out the key times to get the stones, if you didn’t know her as well as I did you would have known how proud she was when she realized she had figured it out.”
She burst through the doors, filling the room with her vibrant soul, you hadn’t felt it in years.
“Y/N I got it! I figured it out!”
“There were four stones on Earth at one point, and I figured it out! Not Tony or Bruce, ME!”
It was a good night after your wife had told you she had outsmarted her friends. And you had happily listened, happily stayed through the night to hear her talk about something she had done, it was the longest conversation you’d had in years.
“She was happy and I knew it. Her eyes were sparkling, her laugh was true, her smile was full again; and I was so happy for her. A smile in her eye and the sound of her laughter, it filled me with hope, it filled me with joy.
“So when she went for her mission for the stones I knew she’d come back. She had to. My love had to have known how to do this mission. She’d figured out the stones for the boys, and had been paired with her best friend.” Clint looked up at you, eyes red and puffy.
“It wasn’t his fault. It wasn’t anyone’s. It was just what needed to happen. We may have gotten everyone back, but some of us still lost, and everyone who lost will remember the hero’s who brought everyone back. I love you Natasha,” the casket was empty but you felt as if that if you opened it, she’d sit up and kiss you. Ruffle your hair and hug you. And that’s what hurt the worst, knowing she truly wasn’t there.
You walked away from the coffin, letting the remaining Avengers start to lower it into the ground.
Clint came up and hugged you. And you hugged him tightly. Afraid if you let go you’d lose him too, and he felt that way too. The tug at your skirt pulled you away.
“Can we go home Mommy?” Jacob, yours and Natasha’s four year old had looked up at you with wide blue eyes.
“Yes baby we sure can.” You picked him up and Clint ruffled his strawberry blonde hair.
“Survived by her son and her wife,” he chuckled a bit through the tears,” isn’t it ironic? The one thing she had fought for to get back, she lives on through.” Clint had kissed your cheek and squeezed your shoulder tightly.
The car ride home was quiet. Jake was humming to himself quietly and you focused on the road.
The apartment felt empty without her. Jake had gone to bed long ago, the whiskey was finished and in the recycling bin, your skirt and shoes lay on the floor in a tangled mess.
She had been happy, it was so clear, in the picture of you three when you adopted Jake she had a genuine smile, a real golden laugh, and her eyes twinkled like the night sky.
She was happy, you all were; and now the tear drops on the frame circled her face. The mascara and eyeliner streamed down your cheeks; and you truly cried. You’d tried to be strong for you son, but you needed to breakdown and cry.
You had watched her drift away, you were happy to listen, happy to care, happy to love her, and happy you all were there.
She was truly gone now, her soul had been released and her smile would linger in peace.
Pepper was nice. And Morgan and Jake got along swell, so when you and Pepper grieved, your children amused themselves together. And piece by piece, Pepper, Morgan, Happy, and Clint at your side, you rebuilt.
A stable life away from your old home, he was now in high school and wanted to know about his mom. You told him everything, the good and the bad, how you had met, and who was his dad. He had no more questions and hugged you tight, you did a little bit more of grieving that night.
You were happy to sit there, and wish she was there. As Jacob and Morgan got married happily. Pepper and you had both walked her down the aisle as a stand in for Tony, and as they exchanged vows, Pepper cried softly and wished he was there.
She would have loved it. Away from the tech, away from the drama, and out on the deck. He never visited, but Pepper did. She showed you the photos of all your grandkids. One looked like Natasha, and had been named so, your son looked proud, and you grieved more and wished to meet her.
She had the kindest smile and eyes, her laugh was just like Nat’s and she was about Nat’s size. She was many years older then when you had met, and she was your favourite but she didn’t know why yet.
So when you were ready, ready to go, you kissed that old photo and we’re ready to see her again. She came to collect you, and you hugged her tightly; she looked the same as she had that night. “Natasha I love you, where have you been?”
“Waiting for you dear, now let’s begin again.”
She grabbed your hand tightly, and off you go, into the place that was now her home.
But that didn’t matter, all you could see, was that she was truly happy.
