Intactivism in action! We had a fabulous turnout for a slightly rainy Saturday. Eight human rights activists stand outside the Liberty Hotel in Boston yesterday raising awareness about the harms of forced genital cutting. While we were in this location a woman came up to us and took our picture. She said she supported our message and shared that her daughter was a midwife who would give a discount to parents who chose not to circumcise. While this a a wonderful step in the right direction- it is not enough! These doctors, midwives and other medical practitioners need to be CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS! Mass General Hospital has a high rate of boys who leave the hospital without the most sensitive part of their penis, have not been protected from sexual assault and have lost their right to security of person, equal protection under the law and the right to bodily autonomy. Circumcision of infants and children violates ALL FOUR tenets of medical ethics. Removal of HEALTHY flesh from children who cannot consent, resist or escape is NOT medicine. It’s time to call this unethical practice by it’s true name- MALE GENITAL MUTILATION.
