Research Paper Prezi
Zombie Cross-Genre Study
I had a fun time researching for my zombie cross-genre study. It really informed on where zombies in modern day media come from and other interpretations throughout the world. As i was writing my paper, I realized I probably could write an entire book on the subject. I find it interesting that humans fear the idea of becoming a zombie more than zombies themselves. As well as the idea that people no longer believe zombies come from witches and sorcerers because of the advancements of modern day medicine. All in all, I’d love to become an anthropologist so I can write scholarly articles about zombies. That’s a sweet gig.
Zero Draft: Zombie Cross-Genre Study
Three Media Elements:
1. I am Legend- movie
2. Left 4 Dead- video game
3. World War Z- Book
Scholarly article about theories of consciousness, about zombies in other cultures? Not 100% sure yet.
Focus/themes/things i noticed:
1. The apocalypse & then zombies
- Generally starts w/ a plague- compare effects & how rapid the spread of disease was
2. Type of zombies/portrayal of zombies
- Different portrayal in each media element b/c of the different goals for each. EX. Left 4 dead focuses on looks & effectiveness of the zombie because it is a video game; World War Z focuses on the human reaction b/c it is a book & is not looking to show amazing graphics
- I am Legend zombies have rational thought- scholarly article inclusion here?
3. How humans deal with zombies/how we end the apocalypse
- Focus of World War Z
Conclusion:
1. The type of media example influences the goals of the people that make the movie, book, or video game. Therefore, the outcome of the story & how the zombie is portrayed is much different.
2. My paper will focus on type of zombie & why they are different or the same in each media example.
***Keep in mind*** The apocalypse thing is super popular because we know a lot about the world now.... look @ old zombies- less human or the same as zombies now?
Zombies in different media.
The Shining
After watching The Shining I was pretty scared. Although I have seen it before, it is a really scary movie. I choose the Come Play With Us clip. I am hoping it is a good clip for an analysis because it successfully scared me. However, the entire movie scared me so it was hard to choose one clip. After analyzing the same clip over and over again I don't think the movie will scare me as much anymore. I might switch clips to the REDRUM scene over the weekend. I don't know if Ms. Laytham will be ok with that but if i can't write enough I might have to. That clip has better use of color but the Come Play with Us clip freaked me out more. I dislike children in horror movies. Its freaky. Finally, it's interesting to have learned my dad was referencing The Shining whenever he would yell "REDRUM" on late summer nights just to freak us out. Thanks Dad.
The Shining Film Analysis: Zero Draft
Clip: Come Play With Us
Film Techniques:
- Dolly shot
- Close-up
- Extreme close up
- Deep Focus
- Dolly Zoom
- Long Shot
Color:
Bright throughout the scene.
Dim lights/darkness could have more effect.
Dullness of the color helps.
Sound:
- Music the entire time- increases with possible trouble
- effective for people that are easily scared
- sound could be distracting
- once the imaginary twins are gone the music is gone and its just Danny's creepy voice talking to make him feel better- effective
Camera distance:
- beginning scene of Danny riding his trike is from far away- it is effective because you hear creepy music & then the child disappears.
- close up of his face after he sees the twin- effective because of hte fear in his eyes
- dolly in on the twins is effective because you don't know what could happen next or if they are real.
Was the scene a success? Easily scared people yes. as well as moderately scared- However, the color and sound could take away from the scariness for most people.
