Being a mech eng girl

I am a girls girl and Mech eng was brutal. it hit me the first term, boy did I cry. It’s a dream crashing down- of the ‘cool girl’ who hangs with the guys, who is chilled and not too girly, the explicit (thought not something I would have admitted) “not like other girls”girl. My god was first year a shock. It hit me like a tonne of bricks falling onto my head and then being dragged out of the rubble by the hair, this proceeded by realising, weeks after the metaphorical disaster, that wounds are fillled with grit and won’t heal. 

It’s a very very specific feeling yet I feel like any girl on a male dominated course will understand. (For this part please let’s suspend the notion of challenging the validation girls recieve from male romantic attention, I’m all for it, but this is just my current, emotionally non feminist account). You’re not a guy, everyone stares funny when a sex joke is made- eyeing you up as if you are the reason they can’t feel full comfortable about their jokes. Uncomfortable yet? Yes you are. But there’s more, they can’t talk about girls freely around you- you’re not quite a pal but nor are you seen as a woman. You’re not hot, you can’t chat about guys, your femininity is an awkward obstacle to carefree pres. As my friend said “ You’re not one of the guys but, being a mech eng girl, you’re not quite fuckable”. 

This is all the more magnified by being one of the, supposable, “girlfriends”. I was not, in fact, anyone’s girlfriend but one of the guys (Kai) in the friendship group ( four guys and me) fancied me. This was not something he told me but I easily deduced and being a fresher, dealing with a new course, new city, new friends it  honnestly was akin to heartbreak to reaise the guys only saw me, basically as a girlfriend. I was not invited to things because it was “Kai’s responsibility to invite her”. Guys I thought were my friends, that I sat with everyday, ate lunch with and worked with didn’t see me as someone they had enough of a relationship with to even invite to a  study session, god forbid to the pub. 

That hurt. That really fucking hurt. It wasn’t just my ego of a friend rejecting you that was upset, it was the collapse of the image of what key friendships ( those on my course) were going to be.

So heart it is: heartbreak of a mech eng girl. 

*if you are someone applying/thining of mech eng please take this experience of mine with a pinch of salt. I still love my course and uni is so much more than a couple guys on the course*
