Film Review | Baby Mama (2008)

While not a total laugh a minute (but close), I think the big takeaway here is that no matter how they try, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler couldn’t hide how much they love each other throughout the movie. Even when at odds, you can see how much fun they’re having. There are some really cheesy scenes that read very mid-00′s, but some great moments too - Dax Shepard is a little bit of scene stealer.

Greg Kinnear makes a great foil to Tina Fey’s easily flustered straight romantic lead and Amy Poehler brings great insane energy. It’s more fun than I was expecting, to be honest. It’d make for a great late night watch with friends.

You know those female ensemble comedies that are all about a group of friends and one of them is getting married and everyone freaks out and relationships go crazy and the dynamic changes but it makes them stronger in the end? I want one with a bunch of funny guys getting ready for a wedding and the groom is scared he's not good enough for her and the best man is bitter and one of the groomsmen is the groom's little brother who just wants to be part of the gang and it's all leading up to the wedding and it's not a fucking "bachelor party get smashed" movie it's a real look into male friendship and group dynamic.

There aren't a lot of movie about men getting married and how they react to it. It's all "my high school sweetheart is getting married and I'm realizing I'm unfulfilled." Fuck that. I want a guy who's in love and is scared he's not going to be enough. I want a guy who's excited about being a dad. I want a best friend who's bitter because his nerd friend is getting married before him. I want an "alpha male" of the group who's successful and charming but can't let go of the past and is a toxic asshole. I want a god damn little brother who's romanticized his brother's friendships and past but realizes he needs to make his own life. I want a  day of the wedding can't find the rings trope filled climax. I want a guy who realizes he deserves to be happy and has an emotional moment with his mom or dad.

I want a god damn male comedy that isn't about getting drunk or having sex. I want to see healthy and unhealthy relationships between male friends. I don't want the guy to "get" the girl, I want him to have some god damn character development. I want to see an emotional, insecure, questioning, imperfect male lead who learns to accept himself. Because movies keep throwing out static assholes we're supposed to think are funny. Either they're bad selfish people or stuck up idiots or naive good guys. And the only thing they "learn" is "yah gotta let loose sometimes!" or "relationships are important!" or "you're fine the way you are!" There's no transition, no change. No development. 

I want a fucking male ensemble wedding comedy.
