@jerrylandis tagged me to share the posters of my 9 favorite first watches this year! or maybe my nine favorite posters from first watches i’m not really sure but i did the first one. i will tag @elicash @williamfriedkin @librarycard @simonettasforza @16mmshrine @redrhodes @reds1981!
easy living - written by preston sturges! thank god!
the exorcist - was definitely the movie of october/november.
american movie - a milwaukee man tries to make his movie. i don’t really know how to accurately describe this one so that you’re interested. everyone is very fascinating and familiar at once, especially if you know these kind of midwestern people, wisconsin people, etc.
man with a movie camera - the first domino to fall for experimental and feature-length documentary. and still one of the greatest. dominos to fall.
written on the wind - really great sirk stuff, with a fantastic dorothy malone. see also imitation of life.
the ladies man - the hat scene. he took down a Ciller. JERRY!
the out-of-towners - the original uncut gems. but for middle america tourists.
daughters of the dust - such a beautifully shot, touching portrait of a sea islands community/extended family. great performances. the bygone world and the world to come. seminal!
shiva baby - really great directorial debut! tense and funny. so well-written. like comfort food that eats you back.

Here they are, my personal top 20 favorite releases of the year. I’ve already talked about them all previously, so if you want more than my middling attempt at graphic design and a playlist, check out my review posts for quarters one, two, three, and four of 2018. Also, check out this special post I wrote for my (very obvious) number one choice because it’s probably one of the best things I’ve ever written. Merry Christmas, and happy listening!
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM BTS
A year of Garth Brooks 28/365

2023 has been a rollercoaster -- in the span of one year i feel like i've aged five. so much has changed for me since january - in no small part because i met someone and fell in love. i am still figuring my shit out. i am still finding my sea legs. but lately, i feel a quiet confidence that i can handle what comes my way. i feel warmth and community and care beyond my wildest fantasies. "the thing about love is that it collapses the temporal order. instead of walking down the street you leap across the field."
