I have been pushing back hard against some of the way we handle the fallout between there being a slight fracture on the team, because in my mind, myself, Emily and David, as our characters, we make a decision, but we make it together and I was finding that the newbies, all their blame and anger was directed totally at me (Oliver) and that didn't track with what we were playing. I don't mind people being mad at Oliver, I don't mind Oliver making mistakes, people being mad at him, it's fine, so long if it guaranteed and makes sense in the context of the story I am telling

We talked a lot in the writers’ room about what Roy has been doing in the years he’s been away from Star City. Right now, the idea that we’re toying around with is he’s gotten himself into some hot water. When he comes back, it’s for a couple of reasons. It’s probably to ask for some help and also because he and Thea have some unfinished business in the relationship department. That’s a relationship that we felt Season 4 played very well and it’s something we’d like to continue and see where we go.

Anatoly has an interesting power over him that I don’t know a lot of other villains — if any villain at all — has ever had. Oliver didn’t kill Chase for a very specific reason, because that’s what Chase wanted, but he tried to kill Malcolm, and he killed Slade once upon a time, and then put him away in prison, and then he went on this anti-killing thing, but he still killed Ra’s al Ghul and still killed Damien Darhk. Anatoly is this weird grey area of a guy that he loves and respects too much.”

"Manu and I work on where they are [Slade and Oliver]... I thought the early drafts of the script almost slipped them back into what you would have seen in the season one, the latter part of season one, or maybe even the early part of season two back on the island. Oliver understands perfectly well that Slade was under the influence of something. He was not of his right mind. With that being said, certain things cannot be undone...Ever. So, I really wanted to make ... Do I trust him when he is of his right mind? Yes. Do I rely on him? Sure. Are we going for a beer after our road trip to go find his son? Probably no. Probably not. There are certain things I cannot forgive. I think that at his core, Oliver thinks that Slade is a good person."
