I've been going through some transcripts for a thing and don't you guys find it interesting?

Stefan: You mean, you knew that you weren't gonna survive this?

Stefan: Elena, how…how could you stand out there earlier with me, talking about making plans for our future, when you don't even expect to have one?

Even before 2x21 where we get to know that Elena isn't sure what love is and what she wants from her future, there is a canonical conversation saying the same things.

I'm not pretening Elena wouldn't choose people she cares about over herself in her current relationship, but it's interesting that the show put it in the same episode where Elena and Stefan talked about the future and the fact entered exactly this context.
