shoutout to toei for adding that incredibly gay anime only scene where Kid realizes how his arrogance and ambition have resulted in Killer getting injured. 10/10 made me throw my laptop.

Watching last night episode broke my heart 😭💔 they're like a family

The episode was so good - I mean, the inevitable was inevitable. But I love how they treated it.

I love how we got the view from the crew's perspective. How we can see - yet again - more parallels between Kid and Luffy. The only reason Luffy's drive to become Pirate King doesn't seem like bluff and bluster is because he's the protagonist.

We know, right? Even if it's not the shape we expect, Luffy is going to reach his goal.

It's HIS story.

It's not Kid's story - but Kid's drive is just as intense - just as willing to risk everything to get there. We don't have Rogue Town scaffold moments with a side crew. WE don't see Luffy's punching a celestial or burning a WG flag as the insanity that they are, because we know he's going to survive.

But what we got in the episode was the confirmation that Kid has just as much drive, just as much confidence. And importantly, Shanks doesn't look down on him.

Shanks underestimates him a little, but once he realizes what he's up against he treats it seriously. The decisive blow doesn't hold anything back because he knows he can't take that risk.

I think too, more than anything else, is that this being the second time they've butt heads with one another, Shanks' response is even more telling.

Beckman takes Kid's arm at some point post Shabody. We don't know when, but the fact is that Shanks doesn't dismiss the crew's growth - referencing Kid's bounty as he's trying to get his fleet to stop antagonizing him.

(that fleet, man my heart goes out to Shanks. You've got the equivalent of angry small yappy dogs surrounding you, and it has got to be a job and a half actually keeping them all safe).

I digress. At the end of the day I liked the episode a lot. Nothing felt unreasonable. Kid's reaction makes sense - he's not underestimating Shanks and his fleet in the SLIGHTEST.

He learned his lessons. Bravado probably cost him his arm. The protracted fight with Big Mom almost resulted in a loss.

Going full power at another emperor off the rip makes sense. Holding back is dangerous - these bastards are STRONG. And Shanks is no different than Kaido or Big Mom in Kid's eyes. He has no emotional or functional reason to hold back. They're all monsters.

Shanks' response makes sense too. He's responsible for the safety of those crews. He either accepted it or offered it, but he's not using subordinates like Big Mom and Kaido, he's their protector.

The only way to protect them was to go all out on Kid.

If nothing else happens for Kid in the series, he forced Shanks to go all out, and that is a short list of people.

Saw the new episode as soon as it dropped last night....oh my Gods. Shanks!!! You beautiful yet frightening bastard, got me feeling all the feels.

Also I'm sorry to the Kid stans.... but your man was all tits and no brain. I like him and all but that was a dumb move for him.

Also Hongo getting screen time?!!! Fuck yeah!!! Yassop should have stayed off my screen though. Was wanting more Beckman. But I'll take my wins!!

I'm so sorry Eustass Kidd... I like you, I promise you I do and I don't think you are embarrassing, you just had high expectations and achieved none because you went after fucking Shanks.

I'm so sorry your dream (and maybe your life) has had that final but... Shanks looks so hot in that scene like... are you actually kidding, that was INSANE. The manga version already left me floored but the anime version... I Feel Things. Shanks and Ben Beckman (he did nothing but still) please call me I am free on weekends.

It was... yeah. It was certainly a moment. I'm actually glad I caught it in the manga first, before the anime came along and just ripped my fucking heart out with how they adapted it.

Fwiw, I don't think the crew is dead. I'm sure we'll see them again, but they're going to have to get past the loss of Victoria. I have a feeling both Law and Kid are going to end up swept up in Luffy's momentum, helping him and changing the world by the end of it.

Law more directly, but I have a feeling Kid's going to pop in when he's needed, after being quite staunchly against the whole idea. Damn tsundere.
