Yet within this Romantic order, the Wano arc—the arc most steeped in cultural history and myth—reveals a disquieting absence. The Kurozumi clan's story, with its fallen nobility, whispered curses, and theatrical duplicity, was the perfect soil for a Romantic-Gothic tragedy: the descent of the persecuted into vengeance, the corruption of victimhood into tyranny. Instead, One Piece flattens this potential into a spectacle of good versus evil. This erasure reveals not merely narrative preference, but a deeper discomfort within shōnen Romanticism itself—the refusal to gaze into the Gothic underside of its own ideals.

In any Romantic-Gothic frame, the Kurozumi story would center on the corruption of longing: the yearning for restoration twisted into monstrosity. Shōnen Romanticism, like modern optimism in general, depends on the fantasy of innocent rebellion—that freedom and goodness are naturally aligned. Yet the Gothic reminds us that rebellion can also rot, that the soul seeking liberation can become monstrous in its pain. The Kurozumi arc should have confronted this paradox: the transformation of righteous resentment into tyranny. Instead, the series retreats into caricature, shielding its young audience from the moral vertigo that defines genuine tragedy.

In Wano, freedom triumphs over oppression, but the psychology of oppression—how it breeds new oppressors—is ignored.
Comparative Lens: Romanticism Without the Gothic
In Wano, Romantic grandeur appears as stylized imagery—cherry blossoms, samurai loyalty, isolationist kingdoms—but not as the existential struggle that defines European or global Romanticism. This aesthetic imbalance flattens the Romantic dialectic: there is aspiration without despair, revolution without ruin, love without the abyss.
By contrast, the Gothic—Frankenstein, Fruits Basket, even Horus: Prince of the Sun—reveals how the longing for purity, eternity, or love can devour itself. If One Piece had embraced the Gothic, it could have transformed the Kurozumi into a meditation on how even the dream of justice can curdle into mythic cruelty.
Freedom's Shadow
The absence of the Gothic in One Piece is not merely an aesthetic omission; it is a moral one. In denying the Kurozumi tragedy its voice, Wano reaffirms the comforting myth that evil lies outside the circle of the beloved, not within it. True Romanticism—whether in literature, music, or anime—must confront freedom's shadow: the way even noble rebellion can be consumed by the memory of wrong. Until shōnen narratives are willing to look into that abyss, their freedom will remain partial, their empathy sanitized, their imagination devoured by light.

I wanted to post my next Thriller Bark comic for Halloween. Sure, I cut down what I was intending to finish a bit, but it’s on time! Yippee!
