This second album by Equally Stupid sees the same transnational crew of three gents working in the same vein as their first Exploding Head, blending Rögnvaldsson's astringent guitar with saxophonist Pauli Lyytinen's this time more mellow tenor. David Meier is still holding things together with a strong physicality behind the drums, but from the cover onwards there's obviously a major change of style. I wonder if they have been listening to John Cale or Arvo Pert as Escape from The Unhappy Society seems less cut-loose than the first album, with greater respect for the notes left unplayed, and maybe more melodic undertows, as well as a lot more reverb! 'Fools Paradise' starts with a lilting phrase on the sax, picked up and given a chunkier rhythm by the guitar before returning to again a mellow exploration of the same line, with swelling arpeggio accompaniment and some very gentle brushed percussion. Where their first outing was brash, impatient and edgy within the domain of improvisational jazz-rock, this album is measured and slightly polished, as if 3 years of work has knocked some of the corners off their quest. There's still enough angular interaction between the two lead instruments, which to my ear works best when there's a hint of humour, as in 'Paranoia.' The sax and guitar chase each other around a geeky riff before the guitar takes off on a lyrical solo, before reverting to joint geekiness. How reverently to take instrumental music is an issue at the heart of all 'serious music,' but it's so refreshing when professionals show their human side, and help us to laugh at the inscrutability of audio art. These three young Europeans certainly take their music seriously, but would probably subscribe to the late Daevid Allen's dictum that 'music is far too important to take seriously'....By ANTHONY SHAW ............. Finnish-Swiss-Icelandic jazz Equally Stupid is a strong and energetic band formed by Pauli Lyytinen, Sigurdur Rögnvaldsson and David Meier, whose melodic and rhythmic production is multilayer. Go and eg. the compositions of progressive rock music leave plenty of room for the mighty soloists. The debut album Exploding Head, published by Eclipse Music in February 2014, received a resounding reception both on the record and on the gig. Trion's second album, "Escape From The Unhappy Society", will be released on the Eclipse Music label "Free Sounds" in January-February 2017. On the second album, Equally Stupid takes its music into a more personal and imaginative direction with its multi-song compositions and combinations. Equally Stupid trio consists of three distinctive artists, each with an active international career of over 10 years behind their own music. The most active bands of the last few years have been, among other things, Elifantree, Pauli Lyytinen Machinery and Raoul Björkenheim eCsTaSy. Rögnvaldsson has come to know, for example, Sigurdur Rögnvaldsson's Dark Forest, DEFEKT and the Uinuva band. Meier has been present in recent years for example. Schnellertollermeier, Trio Riot and Hunter-Gatherer......... Equally Stupid, a band of compadres, that feature three like-minded gents from varying backgrounds, again come together to continue their journey of musical exploration. Building on the ideals of their previous album, Exploding Head (2014), they have expanded their musical palate just enough, while still keeping the core musical direction. Still integral to their sound is Rögnvaldsson’s biting guitar and saxophonist Pauli Lyytinen’s unique tone, all bound together by David Meier’s muscularity and textures on the drums, the group three years later show its a group sound, in a different light. Escape from The Unhappy Society is more melodic and spacious, less of a romping affair with an affinity to melody and lyricism. “Fools Paradise” offers textures with lilting sax phrasing and deeper rhythms by the guitarist Rögnvaldsson which I might add is the unusual sound of baritone guitar, lending a darker sound to the overall appreciated swells. Accompanied by Meirs’ gentle brushed percussion one immediately realizes the groups continued evolution as group sound. Where their first outing was brash, edgy and in your face, this offering is a more measured and a polished sound, offering the listener an alternative look at the ever-evolving ensemble. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of muscularity, angularity and the interaction between Rögnvaldsson and Lyytinen still gives their original fan base plenty of meat to chew on, as best exhibited on “Paranoia.” The riffing sax and driving guitar weave through and around each other like a childlike chase before embarking on a lyrical solo, then reverting to the romp and play of the intro approach. A completely playful approach, it is refreshingly good-natured, and all about the art of the music. These three young emerging Europeans have the right approach. The prowess is there and certainly at their fingertips when needed, but also the humanness of their music shines through, keeping it an organic experience that is polished, but not so much that it makes it a sterile listen like so many jazz CDs on the market today. I have always liked my jazz a bit dirty rice and beans, and this fits the bill......By Nolan Debuke............. ”But here is a musician who has listened to a lot of metal music, and is now creating compositions at times lyrical, but which frequently burst with intense interaction, rhythm and also humor. It makes for intriguing and above all lively music.” - Anthony Shaw, All About Jazz ”Kisima (Dark Forest album) makes an impact with its high-class compositions, arrangements, performance and magical atmosphere.” - Ilari Tapio, Jazzrytmit “Dark Forest makes rock rumble crash with ambient flow and does´t fear to jump into exulting free jazz cacophony. (...) Rögnvaldsson is an enjoyably genre-free player.” - Pentti Ronkanen, Suomijazz................ Personnel: Sigurdur Rögnvaldsson: baritone guitar;Pauli Lyytinen: tenor, alto, bass saxophones,, effects; David Meier: drums. 1. Politician’s Nightmare 2. Birdlife 3. Legacy to the Children of the 21st Century 4. Fool’s Paradise 5. Cruising Back to Mother Earth 6. The Garden of Edward James 7. Paranoia 8. Transpiration 9. Escape from the Unhappy Society

Bo(Lover)ok
I’m a bibliophile, meaning I absolutely love books. It’s a passion I have, really, that nobody in my family really understands. My mother says that I should study, not spend time reading fantasies and fairy tales. But the feeling of a good book, when the characters feel so real and you can sense the emotion; that is what I love. It's not that my father doesn't believe my mother’s philosophy, and if he were to catch me reading one of my books while I was supposed to be studying, he wouldn't be happy. But he seems to understand the joy that I get from reading, so sometimes he takes me to the store and he buys books randomly, on a whim.
Those impromptu bookstore days are my favorite days of all. My father will have barely uttered the ‘B’ of ‘Barnes and Nobles’ and both me and my brother jump up from whatever we were doing and run to get dressed. I grab multiple coupons I print off of the computer, because more coupons means a possibility of more books, and get into the car with lightning speed.
When we get to the bookstore, we all split up. My father goes to one end of the bookstore where his favorite things are, and me and my brother get a double chocolaty chip Frappachino and then head over to our section of the store. I tell my brother to stay in the kids corner, where he gets all of his books, and that he should only come out if he really need me or my dad. And then I walk off.
Teenagers only have a little section of the book store. They pack everything they have into two rows of shelves in the middle of the back of the entire store and pay no attention to it. Even the bookshelves of the teens compared to all the others throughout the store looks to me like a rebel without a cause. Books throughout the shelves, fit in every way possible, and scattered all throughout. I absolutely adore it. I sip on my frappuchino and lose myself in books. The time passes without me even noticing, and I’m sitting in my favorite spot, next to the window where I can see the cars and the mall, with a ton of potential books to buy. As I read the books. I immerse myself in each individual book I pick up, either immediately falling in love with certain characters and stories while choosing to leave others behind.
Hours will pass and I will finally get to relax. There’s no one to bother me, and nothing for me to worry about for long amounts of time as I read and drink my sugary beverage. And even after we leave, my relaxation stays in small amounts. I still have those characters I fell in love with to take home, and I still have those stories I enjoyed to read.
Nobody really understands my love for books. My father helps nurture it, and my brother is enthusiastic about it, but nobody REALLY gets how I feel when I pick up a book. Nobody understands when the pages are perfect, and it’s nice and bound with a new book smell. They don’t necessarily need to understand, I am fine with them going along with their lives. But they can’t feel the euphoria that I feel. They can’t experience the happiness I get. They can’t get joy from the simplest of things- paper and ink. They’re missing out.
