Yesterday, an ER attending stood up for me, the ER nurse, in front of a patient who is insulting and sexist. I knew I was doing a great job, but it was really great for that doc to portray us on a level playing field. The doc told the patient that we are equal team mates that can't function without each other.

This is a doctor who has been in emergency medicine probably about as long as I’ve been alive.

It was nice. Really really nice.

I was really trying to give 2020 a chance because I had some good stuff happen last week.

Then I got COVID.

2020 can go choke on one.

Im in the er/hospital a lot due to my congenital heart defect and all the nurses are always the absolute best and Im so thankful for you guys. Do you have any tips for being a good patient? Thank you so much for the amazing work you do

Hey, anon 👋First of all, I’m sorry that you have to be in the hospital so much. I’m sorry that not everyone is born totally healthy and with all their parts functioning perfectly. I hope you are well and that you are being taken care of. Secondly, thank you. Honestly, I think the one thing that most patients overlook is saying “thank you” to their nurses. We’re not a profession of braggers. We don’t toot our own horns. We do our jobs, professionally and without need for constant positive reinforcement. But sometimes it would be really nice to hear “thank you” from a grateful patient or family member. You can’t say it enough. We can’t hear it enough. Don’t forget we’re human. We get overwhelmed, we get tired. We’re doing the best we can. We’re on your team and we’re just trying to help you.

We’re all humans on this planet together. Let’s treat each other that way.
